Call it a Topy and it's a chunky piece of rubber suffocating your delicate leather shoes; add "Élysée" to the name and it's the latest stylish addition to your bog standard clodhoppers, allowing you to safely navigate French cobblestones while puffing on your Gauloises and having your photo blogged leaning on a fixie... It's all in the marketing you see laugh.gif

FWIW, I think Topyd shoes can look as well, if not better, than the original leather soles - if done properly. Not to mention the obvious longevity benefits already discussed.






I don't topy all my shoes straight away though, I usually wait until it's time to get the first heel replacement done at the same time.

GY are now more expensive than WWC. WWC charged me 1500 for a 2PC from the JJ Minnis Fresco II Book. GY quoted 1800 last time I saw him. He made some CMT Trousers for me at 300 / Pair. His trousers start at 600 for Basic English Cloth. WWC have superior finishing in my opinion. But GY will do CMT.

As an aside, Ralph Lauren has got some new stock in this week - I was at the Chatswood Chase store a couple days ago, and they had some beautiful mid-grey and khaki-esque wool trousers in stock. Their knits are wonderfully soft and comfortable as well, although I'm a tad afraid of the price tags. During the sale they had 60% off some cashmere jumpers, but unfortunately by the time I came back they were gone :(.

Orazio Luciano or "PJ Napoli" is twice the price of the Hand-Finished PJ Product and WWC. It is a whole different kettle of fish though. It makes my "soft" WWC gear feel like armour.

it's not so much an ecommerce issue, but a Wordpress one stemming from an attempt of someone trying to get in to the site admin a few weeks ago. Seems like the cause has been found now though and it's back up, hopefully for good.

The ecommerce is with PayPal but I am going to look at changing that in the future too to a different system.

try the birkenhead point outlet. sometimes you can pick up a steal. i found a blue label charcoal wool suit.. everything was perfect... $1,400 with 70% off.. only to find some jack ass had knicked the trousers. tried calling around other shops to match it but couldn't so i gave up. on the bright side i did pick up a bold purple knit tie from them for $30.

I like to Topy my shoes... Makes it safer when you stomp kick dissenting, whiskey-swilling iGents in the groin or liver. Also, I think it may afford some spring-like capability when you follow up with a knee spike to the face.

Seriously though, now that all my shoes are showing distinct wear from years of abuse, I've had most topied and intend to Topy the last three pairs. Exception: Had the suede Pooles topied upon purchase as I knew I'd be wearing them often while traveling.

You should never buy Ralph Lauren at full price - even the sweaters.

I tend to agree with you here - most of my Ralph Lauren purchases have been on sale or from Birkenhead.

lachyzee - I've been experimenting with a couple of different options on monogramming. I've stuck to the left rib-cage area. Some shirts have very light threading on the monogram, some have a bit more contrast, and I have a pink shirt that has pink threading on it - it looks invisible. I prefer to err on the conservative side, too. But what you see was work-in-progress to get to that decision/realisation. (There are still many things about classic menswear that are work-in-progress.)

Haha Michael, that's my tailor's place in Singapore (and honestly, probably the only true bespoke tailor in Singapore for suits) - only the light blue linen jacket is mine, in mid-commission. Thanks all the same, though!

Shirt: Bespoke OCBD from Ascot Chang, in Thomas Mason Silverline. (interestingly, has a monogram in navy blue)
Jacket: OTR Charles Tyrwhitt in summer tweed, added suede elbow patches (not visible here) myself. (The pattern-matching swept me off my feet)

Trousers: Uniqlo
Shoes: Car Shoe
 

 

 

As a side bar, that outfit kinda captures the mix of high-and-low cost items that young guys, starting out, should feel comfortable in: Finding the optimality between price and quality; wearing what fits well and lasts, and not simply wearing labels; not dropping wads of cash (worse, if it's on credit) on a complete bespoke wardrobe just because.. it's 'bespoke'. I was 27 in that picture, I didn't 'need' a bespoke pair of white cotton chinos then, and I still don't. 

 

Almost forgot, lachyzee - used to be a lawyer in Singapore, moved to Sydney and almost applied to work for PJ, but stuck to the Law.

 

Jaz - thank you and will do, as and when appropriate. The recent debate on menswear 'rules' got me thinking a little. Still deciding if I should save it for the memoirs lol

 

Excellent tumblr, NM - "A grade" fits, considerate camera work, punchy commentary, sprezzy as hell. Hats off to you - "You win You win" =)

It's a shame that Sydney's got you - move down to Melbourne, I'm sure there are plenty of law firms here (I actually have no friggin clue).

Very nice pics to illustrate that we are not talking lumps of retread tractor tyres.

Don't get me wrong, if people prefer naked leather soles then so be it.

I also understand that people with some genuine vintage Florsheim V cleats love the sound of the clack of leather and the click of the metal V cleat as they walk. Despite the fact that the V cleat has been known as the suicide cleat for years.

Most people I know who do dancing relatively seriously prefer leather soles that are a bit shiney.

popped by the MJ Bale laneway sale today at woollahra. barely anything in 38/32. the shirts that were part of the sale weren't to my taste. a couple of doors down was herringbone who were having a 50% off storewide, including CJ loafers. didn't grab anything there either  ):

I was about to say they were called "suicide" cleats... well named as you were highly likely to slip on them and break your neck. Maybe they'll make a comeback along with suicide doors on cars, cut-throat razors and riding a bike without a helmet?

Actually I've found standard half-leather replacement heels can be just as deadly as cleats if the hobnails aren't countersunk into the leather properly, and even then the leather wears faster (especially if you walk a lot in the wet), exposing the nailheads after a while anyway. Full rubber heels for me from now on!
