The bulk of that price would be putting in new seals and testing the water resistance, which is far more time consuming than replacing the battery itself. It's also pretty important unless you want water in your watch.

Even so, $90 is probably about double what it would cost from a regular watchmaker.

^^ Water resistance very important... I ruined my vintage late '50s Titoni Airmaster - rusted and all - because it wasn't properly sealed after getting it fixed. Devastated. Only worth about $80 now but has quite a bit of sentimental value.

Yeah, good call. Money is an issue. Any recommendations at the lower end?

I figured it might be a bit more work and was happy to pay a bit more than normal. It just seemed so extreme, and they said it would take a week to do!

INHO - Hamilton and Tissot are the best automatics under $1000. Manual wind would probably have to be Stowa, one of which (Marine Original) i am just in the process of selling. Only because I have the Limited Edition and I dont really need two

I'm curious.
I've always been a watch cheapskate and wouldn't have more than two watches worth more than $200. I don't care that others spend more but I don't really understand it. But then others cant understand why I spend good money on loudspeakers and amp or turntable.

But one thing I just don't get - is why do you need a waterproof watch?

I never wear any of my watches near anything likely to get wet.

I guess I can see that if you are a deep sea diver you would want to know how long you'd been down - but why would it be a dress watch?

Christopher Ward has some of the more clean and tasteful watches under $1000 too. Been wanting to buy a C50 but too cheap to get one so I settle for a trusty Seiko 5. CW uses them ETA 2824 and 2836 movements.

I'm pretty sure 'waterproof to XX' is only a selling point to entry level watches. It's not something I would even take notice of. But maybe its just to prevention of humidity under the casing?

With winter (and its good pal rain) approaching I think it's time I purchased a decent umbrella.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm happy with a stick umbrella as I don't really have a need for a compact one and prefer the extra rigidity.

Online I've considered Howard Yount and Fox (via The Armoury). Any local options worth pursuing?

I was in the same boat until I realised that I don't have the time to be only focussing on the music when I listen to it. I'm more into cans myself, means I don't have to bother people with speakers or spend over 9000 dollahs on some nice speakers, turntable and amp :devil:
