A bitter life lesson last weekend.

A while ago I bought a pair of black C&J handgrades on eBay. They have been uncomfortable, so I put in a new insole, thinking the old one was worn out.

That made them easier to walk in, but my heel was lifted too high now. I took them to my cobbler. He gave me the bad news: the shoes had been water-damaged to the extent that the layer between the insole and the sole had been warped. The person who had replaced the sole had butchered it, and they are now non-repairable. He said the vendor must have known this, but it's too late to do anything about it.

His advice was never buy a second-hand goodyear welted shoe if it's been resoled. Lesson learned, although I perhaps should have already known that.

BTW, Frank is a very good guy - the best cobbler I've come across. He is in the Mt Waverley village, and really enjoys working with high end shoes. (He's a Church's fan). From my layman's perspective, he seems to really know his stuff, and his prices are good.

PS. Does anyone know if the cost of getting C&J to recondition these would be worth it? Given shipping, I suspect not.

Re handgrades they would be around GBP150 I suspect plus postage. With new Handgrades around GBP400 that might still be worthwhile.

So what are you looking to do ? Total recraft?


If you did Paypal and is is over the 45 days its all lost but some guys pursue the dodgy dealers via the credit card connection with paypal if any.

What would C&J do that a cobbler wouldn't be able to do? I have never had a shoe recrafted, so not sure what is involved. Do they completely re-last the shoe and add new welting?

In more positive news - after much experimentation, I have decided that Hainan chicken rice makes for a perfect luncheon.

I might take them into Christian and get his opinion.


I suspect that ship has sailed. I'm inclined to just take the responsibility for my mistake and move on.

Singapore is exceptional for chicken rice but you can ask 10 people for recommendations and get 10 completely different answers. I suspect it might be the same over here 

CD, hope you can find a good solution for your shoes. Shame the seller may well have known he was selling you product that's so badly damaged. On the positive side, at least you haven't encountered a sartorial related injury (SRI) from wearing damaged goods.

On shoes, I popped into Double Monk yesterday. All the C&Js I was interested in weren't available in my size so I didn't buy anything. Lovely fitout, though.
