Don't quite agree that it's a fad.

Suits with patch pockets have been around for a looooong time (check out voxsartoria's blog for its excellent pictorial history, which shows quite clearly how classic style never really changes).

That said, they are casual suits and may be inappropriate in some of the more anal-retentive organisations (UBS for instance) where senior managers notice such details.

I have one suit with 3 patch pockets and wear it on Fridays and Sundays (for Church) with Shantung and knit ties. Of course, my company's philosophy is simply this: if you wear a suit, you're dressed up... and WTF are patch pockets?

I would not pull the trigger unless you already have navy and grey staples (welted breast pocket; flapped and welted hip pockets).

However, with regard to patch pockets on a work suit, I would agree that it's quite a fad at present, just as having a ticket pocket was a few years back.

I also think that patch pockets arent all that "slimming" optically if youre a little heavier set.

that said, if you constantly use the same tailor I think its good to go with subtle changes in pocket/shoulder/buttons/lapel etc so there is some variety amongst your suits

Some one was asking about MJ Bale lapel width before and I just happened to do a WAYWRN post in mine, so thought i'd share for everyone interested. This is the mudgee weave. They are thinner than Herringbone for example, but not by much, maybe 1cm. Anyway, make up your own mind. Might look a bit strange with a 9cm tie but 6-8cm width ties will be fine.

You legend. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on exactly that one so that was very handy. Am I right in thinking the suit in this link is the one you're wearing? http://www.mjbale.com/suits/2-suits-for-1000/mudgee-weave-grey-jacket

If you are a 38R in Hugo Boss then more than likely the MJ Bale will fit you as well, but without seeing how slim the HB suit is hard to tell of course.

The 38R in HB is fairly slim fitting - how have you found the MJ Bale cuts to be? (sorry to pester you with questions, nobody stocks MJ Bale in Canberra so it's hard to try one on and I need a suit fairly soon!)

Was on the G&G website....dreaming....and saw that in stockists it says 'coming soon' to American Tailors in Melbourne; anyone know about this?

I'll be wearing a Navy suit with a white shirt and black shoes for a formal occasion (not black tie though) does anyone have a really nice idea or recommendation for a tie and pocket square?

Thanks,
Jordon

Speaking of MJ Bale, all stock at themensshop.com.au is 25% off >100$ at the moment. Brings some MJ Bale suits to under $500...

With G&G, you have to get the trees in a separate parcel to scrape under the low value tax-free limit (if you want to be strictly above board), so I imagine the prices from a brick and mortar would be ridiculous.

Very true! I think everyone who wear dress shoes should know how to do this even if they choose not to. Nothing like a pair of well maintained shoes!
