I don't think the monks are the best idea. I have the Herring Shakespeares in brown suede and I don't think they dress down very well--they're too pointy a last, among other things.

I love tan shoes, and tan would look great with white/stone/navy trou, but the thing with tan is that it really stands out, and sometimes you just don't want that from your shoes.

So I would go for brown suede loafers, and perhaps opt for a lighter shade of brown so that they don't contrast too vividly with the white trou.

As for the calf one looking too formal, its a question i have myself.

This is my conundrum too. I like the lighter calf better but feel a suede would be a little more casual. The main thing I want to avoid is my shoes being too dark and like you say, look heavy.
