I think Cubec do MTM. Charles Edward if you feel like spending $500, but you could get 2 pjohnsons for that. Scott Denison and Hemden around the Malvern area. Plenty more no doubt.

Just noticed your subsequent post. I agree with joiji - you're unlikely to get anything MTM in Melbourne for less than $200. I would suggest paying a good alterations tailor to measure you up and then order online. Check the online sites first so you know what measurements you'll need. This won't cost you much, but will increase your chances of getting a good result.

Sounds like they have a relationship with Romeos in Deepdene. I used to go there occasionally; outstanding coffee in an unlooked-for location.

And that little lane has these cafes that are run by cute Asian girls.

And give me a nice gay wink when you spot me please. I'm basically the only Asian around the area who looks like is capable of growing a full beard.

+1. Quite curious - chest or shoulder measurements would be great!

So we going to do this menswear wiki? Who's project managing?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good mender in Sydney?

I put on a new jumper for the first time and noticed a tiny hole in the front. Looks like a moth got to it. The hole is tiny, maybe 2mm square at most, but I want it mended right away. It's a fine weave, new merino wool.

I've just returned from a long time away and I don't know where to go. Are there any awesome menders in Sydney for woollen jumpers??

Thanks!!!

It would be a great place to start for new arrivals and would avoid some of the questions that always get asked (not that anyone is ever reticent to help in this thread) and a handy quick reference guide for old hands. Probably organised by city for the most part.
So under Melbourne, you would have some sections like
-Recommended tailors & approximate prices.
-Recommended menswear retailers, eg Azzaro, Beggar Man Thief etc
-Recommended dry cleaners
-MTM suitmakers in each city eg P Johnson, Deerstyle
-Barbers...
Perhaps other general Aus-wide sections sections on online ordering, canvassing the usual suspects like Herring/Pediwear/AFPOS/endless/US department stores etc but also our own members' online operations, Aus members experiences with various online MTM outfitters.
The only thing we'd have to watch out for is keeping it free of viral marketing. My other concern is that much of the content might be too subjective for a wiki. On the other hand, it could be kept to being directory only, saving opinions for the thread.

So how 'bout it lachyzee, are you going to project manage this?

There is Cecil on exhibition street. I've got no personal experience but I think they come in at about $150.

In general my opinion is that:
-the wiki should, where possible, be kept to being Australia-focused rather than a general men’s style wiki, lest it usurp the role of the forum itself; and
-the wiki should, where possible, be more of a directory of links and information rather than a place for opinion. As an example, we should provide links to cobblers and the price they charge for a topy rather than opining on whether shoes should be topy-ed in the first place – save that type of discussion for the forum itself (or, a blog that any Aus member can contribute to – this would be a separate project).

I don't know anything about the technical side of things, but to be honest I was thinking something very similar to Wikipedia itself.

I'm of the opinion that it would be better if our wiki acts mostly as a directory of sorts - keeping the opinion to styleforum itself.

I think a wiki lends itself to that sort of non-opinionated content a bit better. And, as we know, members’ opinions on things can vary greatly – imagine trying to do a wiki article on what is an appropriate “break” for trousers for example or whether shoes should be topy-ed… I think those debates are better saved for the forum. Similarly, if people go into too much depth on what their own views of a certain retailer or tailor are then you have a forum – not a wiki.

I also think most of the content should be as Australian-centric as possible, rather than making it a general men’s style wiki. We should at least start with collating our Australian knowledge and then see what develops from there I guess.

Links to good threads/posts is a good idea.

I know some other guys have mentioned being interested in photography and writing, but I feel that that sort of thing lends itself more to a blog - something that would also be cool to have in the long run. Photos do make a wiki much more interesting though of course – but for our wiki I think the subjects would tend to be a bit boring. If a general Aus blog ever gets up and running, the wiki could link to or copy some of the content from that.

I thought of a basic structure of something like:

(cities)
• Melbourne
• Tailors
• Dry Cleaners
• Menswear Retailers
• Cobblers
• Barbers
• etc

• Sydney
• Canberra
• (etc)

general articles e.g.
• Shopping online
o Recommended websites for shoes, clothes, MTM suits etc, some tips for measuring and sizing, links to relevant advice threads
o Customs/delivery info
o Brief canvassing of mail forwarding services in the US and their advantages
o Etiquette (e.g. don’t use Beggar Man Thief or McLeods as free try-on services…)
• Fabric choice for Australian climates when getting a suit made

Anyway, all of the above is simply my opinion on what would be manageable and appropriate. I’m sure some of you will disagree.

Wrote the above rambling thoughts as a reply to FXH's inbox but it is all relevant for the main thread.

As far as managing it goes, TBH I have no idea what that would involve and probably wouldn't be the best person for the job. I believe FXH might have some experience with this sort of thing? I don't even know how a wiki gets hosted and if there are any costs involved with that. I just assumed that, once it was up and running and we agreed on a basic format and structure, it could be a collaborative effort and wouldn't need anyone to be in "charge". Not sure how they usually work though...

Or we can forget about wiki, compile a book, publish it laugh.gif

How about people just post them here and i'll compile? Alternatively, PM them or if anyone wishes to project manage just let me know here and we can direct them at you.
