Interesting... 100% so far, guess I'm in the minority. I wear them to special occasions only.

I would wear one every day but they're just not seen in my profession (I've seen the CEO come to meetings in shorts).

I have a couple of pairs of cheleas, but they're a little large for slim pants. I'm talking about the lower, sleeker boots seen in the department stores. I still have a pair of those in my wardrobe, and they are noticebly sleeker. They're also the most comfortable footwear I've ever had. They also don't appear to made by the mid to high quality manufacturers.

I'm not sure if it's just me but I seem to notice a certain increase in pocket squares in the Sydney conservative business dress....

Yep - I've noticed a bit of an uptick in the Pocket Square Index. Slight though. Still not a common sight in my building.

I will always wear one with a sports coat. Generally patterned and silk. I have one that looks like a pale blue bandana, but in silk, which is great because it goes with just about anything.

With a suit to work, about a third of the time I will wear one - just depends what's going on with the shirt/tie. If I have a plain white shirt on, more often than not, I will wear a plain white linen tv fold.

Baxter Boots are excellent as well.

I think the art of wearing a pocket square is knowing when not to wear one.

Feeling you always have to wear a pocket square can very quickly lead your image down the road of "he's clearly trying too hard".

Had to chuckle about this because I nearly did the same with a pair of trousers I wore for the first time on Friday. Last minute snip while heading out the door!

As for pocket squares, I hope the Fairfax press isn't reading this thread because there will be an article about this 'new, hip, retro trend' sweeping workplaces across the nation. Then every dork and his friend will be stuffing their hankies in their jacket pocket.

That is why I've yet to put a pocket square on even though I really want to rock one. I simply cannot find an occasion to wear it. As a young 20 something, and especially with the places I go with mates, slapping on a suit even sans tie is almost trying too hard. Fine dining happens way too rarelyas we have quite a few cheapskates in the group who won't eat anything other than Pho or similar from Footscray (not that theres anything wrong with Pho. Pho is awesome).

Congratulations on having the awareness to dress appropriately for your surroundings. You are already ahead of 90% of SF members. Maybe 99%.

Blahman, I agree with you on two fronts. Pho is awesome and I can't imagine a situation in which going out for pho and wearing a pocket square naturally co-exist.

If, however, you want to try the ps-wearing thing out to see if it is for you - go for a white line tv fold with a suit - that works for all ages and is not too thrusty. With casual, find a darkish (maybe madder) ps and whack it in a tweed/herringbone jacket with a pair of jeans. Too much for a quick pho perhaps, but okay for the movies or going to a bar or whatever it is young people do these days!

I was out to dinner on Sat night at Ucello - which is in the Ivy and overlooking the Pool Club bar. So Mrs S and I went and checked it out. What a very young scene it was. We felt ancient, and given that neither of us was wearing a tube-mini dress (outdoors in winter, mind you) or an ironic t-shirt, overdressed.

That place sounds pretty reasonable. $45 for 3 courses.

I typically wear a pocket square most days if I am wearing a suit. My go to default is the white linen, but I picked up a few silk numbers in Italy last year. What I am more concerned about is the rise of bad pocket squares. In recent months I have noticed a slow increase in the number of pocket squares in the media and on the street, apart from the solid whites, nine out of ten are typically bad. Either too matchy-matchy (most likely from a box shirt-tie-cufflink-square set) or just a colour or pattern that has nothing to do with the rest of the outfit.

That said, the increase in the use of squares is not a bad thing on the whole I suppose. It almost reminds me of when I first started working out from uni in 2004 - French or double cuffs were quite rare. I remember wanting to buy a French cuff shirt for job interviews and the like. DJ's on Bourke St at the time had only a single tiny little shelf in the back of the men's shirts section dedicated to French cuff shirts (now days they wouldn't even be segregated). Within two years they were the standard. Who knows, maybe two years from now pocket squares might be standard issue?
