The Sydneys look superb!!! I was tossing up between a pair of Marlows and a pair of Sydneys and ended up getting the Marlows only because I got them at a pretty good price. The 341 last is great!

 

I have a pair of Florsheim suede chukkas - bought just before I started building my shoe collection. The'y look similar to the C&J Tetbury and are super comfortable - too good to donate right now and strangely enough have gotten as many (unsolicited) compliments as the suede double monks. The only thing is that after about six months of intermittent wear with regular application of the spray-on protector, the suede on the sides is looking a little rough - almost like a pilling effect.

 

I'm not particularly impressed with the quality of the suede on these chukkas but I plan to wear them out and then replace them with a pair from Northampton :)

As I mentioned a little while back, after I posted a pic of some recent acquisitions from Vanda, here are a couple of ties that I got from Deer Style in Brisbane recently. Once again, sorry for the crappy phone pics - they really don't convey how nice the ties are.

Those ties look really good, Journeyman! I'd love to see them in the context of a shirt and jacket when you have a chance.

Journeyman, went up there yesterday to also check out some ties and shirts.  Not open, door in darkness and no answer on the phone.  Thought they had shut down.  Glad to see your post today, will persevere with them and maybe get there next week.  Like the choice of ties very much.  Any royal blue french cuff shirts?
 

 

SYDNEY IN 24 HOURS 

 

Meant earlier this week to drop a line to the Members about a little operation thats opened up in the last 7 months down at the Rocks.  For those of you like me who visit Sydney on pretty tight schedules, this is a spot worth taking the time to visit.  I think he is trying some innovative things and the styling is quite good.  He mentioned the new 5 button winter vests will be in store soon.  There are still some corduroy vests and jackets left, but all in all good to see yet another independent innovative tailor looking to create a point of difference.  The ties need some work, they are not quite there yet but they are a start. http://www.mastertailor.com.au/

 

On another perhaps less than upbeat observation, I went up to check out old Vince Maloney & Co.  This place has been an institution for longer than I can remember, my dad took me there for my first oxfords.  Whilst they do have some beautiful pieces, I couldn't find anything to encourage the wallet to come out.  Much of what I saw seemed pretty bland with minimal deviation from the stock standard.  Ties and shoes were all very conservative.  Perhaps Im just too difficult to please these days or the location near Tatts and the Hotel warrants this type of middle of the road conservatism.

 

I also paid homage to the Harrolds Mausoleum.  Cripes, this place is something else isnt it?  Met Vic who, whilst seemed overwhelmed with the heat, was pretty knowledgeable and helpful.  The standout here for me was the small range of Caruso jackets/blazers, windowpane of course.  They were outstanding as was the ristretto.  

 

Lastly, Zegna, they were their usual efficient and officious selves, yes I did feel privileged to be in their presence (I say this tongue in cheek).  Wonderful fabrics and the new shop is certainly better than the old Macquarie Street dig.  What bemuses me thought is you have to 'ask' to see the couture ties...they're tucked away in a bottom draw upstairs.  Dont understand this retail model at all, especially when the tie wall downstairs has a pretty middle of road range of ties, nothing there Id jump at - cant help but think Zegna ties has lost their way amongst all the others who have caught up in regard to design and quality - Zegna just dont seem to grab the attention they used to.  The couture ties, whilst expensive were beautiful and the right width at least.  Just cant help but think there are so many others producing wonderful ties now, think Drakes, Charvet as always, and my old Sulka's still cut the mustard no problem.  Anyone disagree?

 

Anyway, Sydney as always is a terrific place to visit and I enjoy the spectacle that is the Top End of retailing.

 

 

I considered those but I wanted a full dainite sole.

Where can I find a shawl collar tux in Melbourne without having to step foot in Herringbone? I assume Henry Bucks would be the best choice but I'm trying to spend under $800.

Yes, that's right - the owner (who is both a lovely person and very knowledgeable about clothing) runs it as a sideline to his full-time job and so he is usually only available before or after work, on the weekend, or very occasionally during lunchtime.

You need to check out Stafford Ellison. Last year they had single button Shawl Lapel dinner suits in 100% wool, made in Fiji. Nice slim cut as well. Sure they were fused, but at about $350 on sale that costs roughly two dinner suit rentals.

Check out their stores and DFO outlet to see if they still stock them.

Azzaro have both Mabro and Antichi Telai dinner suits in stock. These are much better made (fully canvassed, hand finished in Italy) but they have peak lapels. You may be able to get them for under $800.
