Speaking of irons. I have cleaned ours, Sunbeam, but there is a build up of crap I noticed, yes she does all the ironing. If memory serves me correct one way to get grime off was by ironing brown paper? I know that you can get cleaning fluids for the steam vents but as this one is a non teflon plate I am somewhat vexed as to how to get this buildup of crap off.

Any suggestions?

If its a stainless steel model plate just clean it with a rough dish clothe and a bit of spray cleaner or a bit of liquid Jif stuff.

Run some vinegar and water through the iron - just like the coffee machine - has it got a self cleaning setting?

No, as a former wardrobe mistress in the theatre she irons very well thank you. Puts perfect crease in all my shirt sleeve's. And yes I do use organic cleaning agents on my Expresso machine, sadly the water only comes from Lake Jindabyne

I thought that a properly ironed shirt (using a sleeve board) would have no creases.

I hate getting / putting creases in my sleeves.

I googled it but just got some pics of smaller ironing boards.

I like a bit of a crease - at least in the mornings - shows you had to iron it rather than throw on a no iron shirt.

I've seen home made ones - essentially its a small width ironing board that will allow a whole sleeve to fit - or trouser leg or any hollow thing and with no legs or stays to get in way - so you can iron without creases - a lot of dressmakers / sewers* have them at home - you don't want creases ina wedding dress etc .

You could just get a 4 x 2 and bolt it onto a stud on the wall and wrap a bit of ironing board cover around it with gaffer tape.

*Thats a sewing person not a sewer person

I was down town Sydney in Sussex St near the Trades Hall the other day and noticed a big shop called Levendi Tailors. Levendi is a Greek word from memory.

Thrifty Melbourne iGents: I took a train out to Glen Huntly today to check out the many, many op shops on Glen Huntly Road. Posh Opp Shoppe (right near Glen Huntly station) was closed, as were one or two others, but there are at least six or seven op shops between Glen Huntly and Elsternwick stations, so it was still worthwhile.

Any finds? Just a Marks & Spencer tweed blazer in my size (36R) that I'll need to get the sleeves lengthened on for it to be wearable (it was $28), but tbh I enjoy the process even if I don't find much. Oh and just to name drop -- I saw a DB pinstriped Zegna suit at the Red Cross op shop. Way too big for me, but it was cool to see something of decent quality.

Anyway, that area seems like pretty fertile territory for thrifting. Cheapskates, take note!

As fxh stated it wears off but it looks sharp to begin with and sadly I don't think I would get away with buying her a sleeve board, 'look darling this will improve your proficiency while ironing my clothing for me'
As if I would get out alive after that remark anyway the division of labour in our house is she irons I cook.

That's the opposite of my house. I've even started ironing her (one) work shirt/blouse. She used to wear them more often but got sick of ironing them. I've started ironing it for her because I think she looks fantastic in them.

Ahh, so it is just a smaller, though somewhat specialised, ironing board.

Methinks I will have to invest in one........or some 2x4
