So am I.

But I don't know it'll go too well with my high-contrast Asian tones (dark hair, light skin). Not enough echoing contrast in the outfit imo.

BTW: Check out the latest Men's EX (July) for a pretty good spread of 300 street looks, most of them with a classic tailoring bent. Some familiar faces there like Solito Snr, and the Rubinaccis (Mariano and Luca).

I want to get something of real quality, that will last and that I can be proud of! I've been trying on off the rack items such as Canali, Zegna, Hugo, but I am yet to find one with a fit that suits my body shape. So I'm now leaning down the MTM or bespoke path. From what I've read, options for this are limited in Perth, so my options are to go to Melbourne, Sydney or Singapore (fiance is Singaporean so travel there fairly regularly).

My 2 cents.

I went through the Tuxedo purchase pain earlier in the year. Buying a tux is different to buying a suit. You only have one tux in your wardrobe at any given time...and it generally has to last a long time to justify the purchase price for something that is worn very infrequently.

Therefore, you have to be sure it is as close to the optimum as possible..because its not like you can buy a new one next season and fit the older one into rotation.

OTR has the advantage that you know it will fit you..that what you try on in the store is (small alterations excepted) is what you will look like on the night.

I'd keep trying OTR as well (although I understand in Perth your selection may be limited). Manufacturers will make dinner suits in different blocks, make sure you try on as many as you can E.g. the Canali tuxedo in the drop 6 body is a different fit to the drop 7 body. Likewise the Zegna Roma fit tuxedo is a sack...whereas the Milano fit is a completely different suit**.

In my search for OTR dinner suits I tried on
Canali drop 6 and drop 7
Zegna Roma Fit
Boss (two models, the Cary/Grant and another body)
Armani
Ralph Lauren Black Label Anthony model
Mabro
Versace Collection
Tom Ford

Originally I tried all these on with the aim of scoring a cheap tuxedo new/2nd hand off the internet, but in the end I pushed the boat out and bought BNWT (but at 50% of retail). The other problem is that dinner suits rarely go on sale (but Ralph Lauren were selling their Anthony tuxedo at 30% in Autumn... which brought it down to $1800).

Re MTM/Bespoke. I have never gone down that road, but many people who have say that its hard to get close to the 'optimum' first time. A relationship with a tailor/cutter takes time to develop and you may not get it fantastic the first time out. Like I said, this may not matter for a suit which can go into rotation, but for a dinner suit it may be a little disheartening.

Because of that, I'd stay away from offshore MTM and stay local. That way you can keep hammerring away at your local source until you get it as close to perfect as you can. Your budget of roughly $2500 will buy time with top-notch local tailors, as well as top quality OTR and local MTM.

People speak highly of Patrick Johnson but I'm not sure how that helps you in Perth.

**assuming Zegna make a tuxedo in the Milano body.

Want to buy some leather belts locally and found a guy on Ebay who claims to make them in Melbourne.

No recommendation from me, as I have never bought anything from this bloke (belts might be rubbish or great - so I have no opinion).

But for the price of a Target "made in china" I am thinking of risking it.

My question is , for use with a suit, should I go Plait (as in the first link) or smooth ? Belts will be Black leather to go with my new C&J's and Church's, and slightly older Cheney's.

Someone in an earlier thread mentioned that you can get leather belts at QV Market as well - anyone in Melbourne tried this ?

thanks, that makes sense - but I'm not sure I should be taking fashion advice from the "prince of paisley" though

A quick endorsement for a Melbourne conservative business dress based cobbler: Rekaris on the corner of Russell St and Lonsdale St (exact address is 168 Lonsdale). The main guy knows his way around English made shoes and seemed to be honest and the prices appear to be quite reasonable. He also mentioned that he also makes shoes, but I was in a rush and didn't pry him for details.

^^ The girl friend likes to be a dog or the girl friend is actually a dog?

Rekaris has been quite well regarded it seems and has been around for many years. I haven't been there myself but I have read quite a bit about the guy on the forums.

ColdEyedPugilist: Can just change the shirt. The jacket style is really something different though.

Sorry, mate... Might be a while.

Was just at P Johnson Sydney, and poor Tom's stuck here because of the Ash Cloud.

Hope he gets back to you soon.

What about forum-member Zissou? Have not bought any of his products but they look nice.
