I went out on a first date the other night, wearing a very nicely fitted olive/gray sport coat, pink shirt (no tie), slim fit levi 514's, Burgundy wingtips and a nice light blue checked pocket square. My female roommates and their friends approved and agreed that I looked fantastic except for the PS. They said that with it I looked like a peacocking dandy...(not those exact words but similar description).

Since this was a pseudo blind date I decided it might be best to "ease" her into my sartorial style.

I did miss the PS though...That will be the last time I listen to females for style advice.

Even without my PS the date went extremely well and I'm on for part deux sometime this week.

Sorry for the threadjack but what fold do you all think would work for a FIT similar to the one I described above? I initially went for a 4 point and thought it looked pretty decent.

As with men, some women have better taste than others. I ask my wife for her opinion about what I wear all the time.

Look, if a girl told me she would ******** with me if she saw me in acid washed jeans, I'd get a pair.

Women cannot choose men's clothes worth a damn. However, they know a well-dressed man when they see one. The sad irony...

My wife will pick up sweaters, t-shirts, polo's etc when she sees them on sale or at an outlet. She has a pretty good eye in this area. In no way will she ever pick out a suit, tie, or pair of shoes. That said, I do value her opinion and will often take her with me when I buy certain things. For jeans, she is very helpful, for example.

The myth is that all women know more about dressing men than all men do. I believe it's true, however, that most women do, in fact know more about dressing men than most men do. But that is because most men know nothing about dressing themselves and consider football jerseys and sneakers appropriate attire for Casual Fridays.

I am hard-pressed to think of even one man that I know personally who doesn't trust a woman's judgment on clothing more than his own. (You guys don't count because I don't know you personally.)

Whether or not women like men dressed up varies wildly and is irrelevant. What matters is the female response to the opportunity to choose what a man wears. More often than not, this response is to choose overly flashy, garish outfits that degrade the wearer. The sad thing is that, as is stated above, this is still better than what would result from a man dressing himself. There are exceptions to this, as to most rules of thumb. Only a fool would argue that all women have bad taste, but it is equally foolish to take the sartorial advice of a woman simply based on her gender.

My mother, having had to dress many models as a photo stylist, has a pretty good eye for what looks good and what is well built (having also done a fair amount of sewing and alterations). I am always excited when I recieve an unexpected package from her containing clothing--especially when it is something like a thrifted, most likely unworn, paul smith suit.

The girl who was subletting my apartment this summer however had terrible advice. She questioned why I wouldnt buy a black suit and chastised me on wearing brown shoes with a navy-based suit...

I wonder how many of the men who posted in this thread that women should have no say in their men's wardrobe are single or have been married for too long. Sure, there is a problem when a woman dresses you from head to toe. I don't, however, find it problematic when a woman (a girflriend or a wife), who is "very well trained by her mate," sage words by the OP, gives you some caring clothing advice.

the UK tv show 'What not to wear' doesn't do too badly with dressing up the guys. Some of it looks outrageous but there have been a few instances where i quite liked what they did.

The US show of the same name doesn't dress men anymore, just women...
