Generally I avoid merlot at home, although I'll buy Cab-Merlot blends. About a month ago, my wife and I were out, and our meals were difficult to pair (I had a steak, she had seafood) so I ordered a Washington State Merlot (don't remember the label, but it was from Vashon Island)--and it was great. I finally understood how Merlot was supposed to taste. Lesson learned: a good Merlot is good.

Try a Paloma, Pride, Switchback, Pahlmeyer, etc... merlot and it will change the way you view the varietal. Or if you favor French wines, Petrus, or most right-bank Bdx will change your worldview as well.
