Air them out for a few days. It's kind of a byproduct of the leather tanning process and being stored in a small box/plastic for awhile.

Hey guys, I'm looking for penny loafers that are a little more streetwear-friendly/less shiny than Bass Weejuns. I guess I could get down with BoO x Sperry, but I already have a pair of their boat shoes. Any other ideas?

Grapevinehill has been selling some nice made in USA Ralph Lauren penny loafers on ebay for cheap, might want to check if they have any in your size left.

I've never liked weejuns because of that shiny plastic look they have now too.

These shoes still smell horrible

It could be the dye. I am going to try some of those laundry pads stuffed in them. Other ideas? Keep in mind these are brand new and the whole shoe smells, not just the insides.

Cedar shoe trees might help too. If you bought them from a store, consider just returning them for another pair. It shouldn't take that long for them to loose the smell.

Are there any products or sprays that might work w/o damaging the leather?

Yes, cedar will absorb moisture and can sometimes help with smells. I wouldn't spay them with anything.

Robin, thanks for the rec. RL's definitely look like higher quality. I might kop a pair to wear in more traditional fits. I guess I should clarify that by "streetwear-friendly", I meant " a little bit out-there." Either slightly weird detailing, out of the ordinary color scheme, or non-leather material would be cool. I'm thinking more of an EG or BoO take on Americana than RL or J. Crew...

I rubbed mine down with rubbing alcohol, stripping that plasticy finish off. Then I hit them with 2 coats of leather conditioner lotion. A good polish with some cordovan cream and you have a nice-looking pair of loafers.

I have the same problem with a pair of the classic browns I bought a little while back. I've aired them out and they're better, I thought it was the laces that smelled horrific. I was going to get some cedar tree shoes and see what happens.

There are not really any fun ones out there right now, and I spent lots of time trying to find some recently myself. If you want some different color way, just think of something doable and call up Quoddy - they've done nice ones for Rogues Gallery in the past.
