That's true only to the point of whether you can safeguard your oil resources... Who would win a war between China and Iran?  (That's not necesarily a hypothetical question, China is going to have to find a way to deal with oil shortages in the next 20-30 years)
That depends, iran have nuclear, china have many people, it depend how you fight. But Iran will win because there are more people of Islam there, so the grace of Allah will be with them.
Dude, I hate to break it to you, but there's not exactly a strong correlation between Islamic faith and military success.  When's the last time an Islamic state has won a war against a non-Islamic state?  I think you'd have to go back to the time of the Crusades (and don't say Afghanistan/USSR).  Even the French have been more successful in warfare than the "people of Islam."
Well, there was the Algerian Rebellion which was the first defeat of western army by non-turkic muslim forces since the Crusades. But, that was against the French, so that really doesn't count. I don't know why Americans are so suprised the French wouldn't help us get Saddam out of Iraq. After all, the French wouldn't get the Germans out of France.

I have a hard time understanding that a sensible person would consider a country "friendly" based on what his government says it should be. I have friends from many nationalities and I am no friend of my own government.

Hmm, perhaps you should do an analysis of WWI w/o American intervention...?  Considering that almost the entirety of the war was fought INSIDE FRENCH TERRITORY I hardly consider France a winning party, the only reason they were on the winning side was because of the Americans.
You should read better the history of the WW1... Being the winner depends on where the war took place? Ok, but in this case French are all the more the winner as they were loosing not only soldiers but civilians and buildings. It was a WORLD WAR. So not only in FRANCE... What means winning a war? So for you the winners are germans as the fights were not in their contry.? Without French, Germans and Europe, the wars in which US would have been involeved would sum up to cowboys against indians, CUBA and Vietnam... The US  even dare not to start a war against Mexico or a south American country . Too spooky for them....Too close countries... They prefer bombing from boats 5000km away from their enemy like in Serbia.... Less spooky.  Of course, a real war (face to face on the ground) would make more deads than 2 buildings crashed in NYC... And what to say about bombing Japan with a A bomb? Is it a fair way of making war?

I wasn't talking about government, just about your feelings

Well, I'm Canadian. I think everyone is our friend. Except the Quebeqois.
Hey, nobody touch the Québécois. They invented the poutine, and I am in stitches whenever I hear them speak French. No, seriously, the Québécois are probably among my favorite groups of nationals, if not my favorite. I understand the Canadian anglophones might have issues with them, but, darn it, give it to them: they survived deportation and persecution, kept their language and culture strong.

ernest, you're being ridiculous. If the US didn't intervene in the first and second world wars, France would be a German colony right now, and you'd be typing your messages on styleforum in German. err, sorry... Frankreich würde eine deutsche Kolonie im Augenblick sein, und Sie würden Ihre Anzeigen auf der StyleForum auf Deutsch schreiben.

This is the funniest thing I have read in at least two days. So America shoud thank France and Germany for hosting big wars in which we could strut our stuff and demonstrate our superiority? I don't think any Americans are likely to see things that way, not exactly ...

you're right, the US should just use the french method of fighting wars and surrender with grace, then deport their own citizens to concentration camps.

Do you not remember the war of 1812, the Spanish American war....ernest speak less and hold your tongue. As to the 5000km away crap, who do you think invented that idea, Germany with the Howitzer. As to the A bomb, you fool, if not for the Atomic weapon used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the war would have continued as a guerilla war, causing countless more deaths in Asia, not only of Americans, but other nationalities as well, not French, but most any other nationality on the good guys side. What do they teach in French schools, cooking?

sure, but they aren't very nice

We can go round and round and round and round and round and round like this forever. We will always find faults with any country, and each fault will find its way to being explained, condemned or exonerated. The same arguments keep coming back. It is tiresome. Really tiresome. I guess I retire.

You really think so? The French-speaking ones? I find them extraordinarily pleasant, despite the awful weather conditions... They're even pleasant with me, and I'm French, for God's sake. (they still haven't forgiven us for "abandonning" them, I hear)

ernest, Ever hear the expression all is fair in love and war? To say bombing countries from cruise ships is unfair is ridiculous. Why is it not fair, because the country we are fighting does not have the same technology? You fight a war to win and you use the arsenal you have to accomplish that.
