the best class I've taken was actually through my university during my senior year, "intro to wines". It was an excellent class, and much harder than people thought it would be, rumor has it that it was the "most failed class on campus". I think only around 5% actually fail, but I'm not sure how this compares with the rest of the university.

if I remember correctly, it was 17-18 2-hour lectures with 5-6 wines tasted in each class. Some magnificent wines were tasted including 1975 Quinto du Noval, 1999 Ch. Lascombes, 2000 Ch. Pontet-Canet, 2003 Ch. Guiraud Sauternes, and we had some excellent guest speakers including members of the Mariani-May family from Banfi, the head of C. Von Schupert from Germany, and the owner of Grammercy Cellars in WA.

The exams were very detailed and I can see how they can trick many people. I loved every minute of it!

Our textbook was Wine for Dummies

+1

It's what we're using for my class and the teacher does all kinds of judging/traveling to taste. Not that that means it's great, but puts the information forward clearly and concisely at the beginner level.
