I don't know, I can always read my energy levels and I know I have a lot more of it after 3PM or so.

I would think that doing cardio before breakfast and doing weights in the evenings would be the proper way? What do you guys think?

I do it about an hour after I wake up and before I eat anything. That way, I burn fat that I already have, instead of eating and burning what I just ate.

I'm definitely in the camp with those who recommend exercising based on your schedule.

As far as how to know?

It took me a long time to figure it out, but it came down to my sleeping schedule and my bodies natural energy cycle. Completely subjective - I found that I am more focused and energetic in the mornings, and so I try to keep a 5:30am gym schedule every day. I think the routine is very important.

Personally, I couldn't do a split workout like the OP suggested - run in the am, lift in the pm. I find that I need a solid 24 hours to recover from the previous days workout.

Same here. I get it over with in the morning so I can do other things in the evening.

Routine is absolutely key.

For it's always been about scheduling 3 sessions a week, and then throwing in more at my own discretion, but unless there is something huge happens, I know exactly when I will work out every week and its at least 3 sessions.

I've heard, training in the morning is the best time as you burn more calories as you haven't eaten anything

From what I've read, the best times are 3 hours after waking up, or around 3-4pm, after the afternoon crash, the reasoning given was that those times are when the nervous system is most "primed" for action. But you can adapt to just about any time. Anecdotally, this seems to be true for me. It also depends how technical your workout is. I've noticed that my Olympic lifts tend to be not so good in the early morning, but are as good as they're going to be between 3 and 4. The difference is negligible with less technical lifts, and I can't see it making any difference at all for isolation exercises.

As others have said, do what works for you and what you will stick with. If I go after work I end up skipping a lot. Making it the first thing in the day makes me do it (I have only missed 2 planned days in the last 14 months, both times from forgetting my gear at home on days when I have had full schedules).

Most trainers I have talked to recommend doing resistance/weights in the same session with the cardio, and to do cardio after resistance, but they don't all agree, and the most important thing is to do, as has been said, what works for you to make sure you do it.

I used to train on an empty stomach, but again, trainers I talked with recommended a small amount of food in my stomach to reduce the chance that I would burn muscle for energy. I am considering going back to an empty stomach, however, because I don't feel it has made a difference (and I gave it 4 months).

I'm in the gym at 6 a.m. Love it. Sets up my day. Loads of energy.
