I normally shower and shave (straight razor, 2-passes) in maybe 25 minutes, 15 if I hurry.

I have been wet shaving for over ten years and finally ditched the Mach Three for a single blade safety razor ( mid 1960's Gillette Slim adjustable) six months ago and I have been getting the best shaves since then.

Right after making the lather with your shaving soap/cream and badger brush, I soak my face with a really hot face cloth to open up the pores before applying the cream. Shaving then becomes a breeze after that.

Ugh. I got way too daring this morning, tried doing a 3rd pass against the grain. [nsfw][/nsfw] As you can see, cuts galore, and visible hair all over my neck. Christ.

brian sd are you applying a hot towel to your face for 3-5 mins before shaving?

Here's my old routine though I don't like a super smooth shave anymore. You need the right prep, products and technique.

1. 10 minutes before you shave use a pre-shave oil or wash your face with warm soap + water and use a light cheap moisturizer after

2. Shaving in the shower at the end is best, if not splash lots of hot water on your face when ready

3. Use a genuine badger hair brush along with high quality glycerin based shaving creme, I use geo f. trumper and have for the past 10 years. Stay away from cheap gilette foams and edge gels. Shave with the grain, relather and go against the grain for smoother shave.

4. Use less blades for less irritation, I use a sensor excel with an edwin jagger razor handle (again for the past 10 years though this is unnecessary). I use each blade maybe 5-6 times before tossing.

5. Use an alum block rinsed under cold water to seal the pores and any nicks (though I never get nicks anymore) and then moisturize.

Since I switched from poor technique, products and prep to this routine ten years ago I never get irritation or cuts/nicks anymore.

Some of us will never be rid of visible hair - it's a function of your follicles/pores/hair darkness/thickness. My face may be velvety-smooth post-shave, but I still can see the dark facial hairs. I just live with it.

That said, you were probably being ambitious/experimental with the ATG pass. I've not done that in years. Did you change out your blade before doing that? If this was the blade that pulled the last time you shaved with it, then your results are not at all surprising.

Alright, it's getting better and better. 1 cut last time and 0 cuts today. It's not as close as it could be on my neck, but I'm takin baby steps here. My face is silky smooth, and I'm starting to enjoy the shaving process instead of dreading it. Thanks for all the help, iGents, etc!
