Hopefully, the girlfriend isn't a loser and has friends of her own and things to do. That also helps.

I used to have a long term g/f that was hot and smart and so on, but also highly volatile and with no close friends.

Get a more secure girlfriend. Of course, if she really wants you to stay, and she is a smart girl, she can definitely make it worth it for you. Now that's a fair trade.
