The Nov 2008 issue of GQ has a two-page spread on winter boots. p.212-213. Looking at it right now. Four of the boots are listed as <$400, two of them <$300. I can scan and up it maybe tomorrow.

IIRC, the Danner Mountain Light has gore-tex. Thinsulate or shearling bean boots are also an option. The Quoddy Grizzly boot comes in shearling, though I doubt it will do much against water. Russel mocs would also be functional.

I don't know -- I just can't imagine busting out a pair of $300 or $400 boots and walking around New York. I'm less concerned with the water and more with the salt and silt and overall disgusting shit that lies on the city streets. surely there is some sort of stylish, functional, affordable option. Don't make me go to EMS and buy a pair of sneakers. Those won't go well with slim jeans.

^^^ The pricetags on the boots in GQ appeared to be mostly because these were designer renditions of styles already mentioned in this thread. All appeared to be waterproof, and most seemed to be lined and/or have rubber soles.

Anyone tried these - LL Bean Katahdin Iron Works Engineer Boots? They are made by made by Chippewa in Carthage, MO. I got a pair about a month ago, and so far I love them. I don't know if they would be warm enough for extended treks through the snow, but that is what my Sorrels are for.

I just got a pair today. I'm a 12 in most shoes, an 11.5 in Alden Indy boot, an 11 in Chucks. I got the 11.5 D in the Katahdin and they fit great. Maybe a little narrow on the right foot (the bigger of the two) but not bad and should stretch out. They come in a wide width, but I'm afraid that might be too wide. The length is great though. The quality of these boots really impressed me. I just got done returning three different pairs of Alden boots for poor quality. These are much more rustic, but the quality is very high and the leather is quite nice. The fact that you can get a US made, Goodyear welted boot for $150 is rather impressive these days. Just for fun I've decided to add some pics of my new boots after one coat of Obenauf's.
