I just called TSM about the Ravello boots.  They had my size, but they are built on a leather sole.  Non-starter for me for boots.  But an FYI, there are sizes still available.

9D irregular list as bad as the 9.5D. 8 pairs total. No shell.

I have to say J Crew has some of the best customer service I've ever seen. I posted about ordering a pair of their new alpine grain cap toes that came with a big area on the quarters of one of the shoes where the grain wasn't stamped. I called, they immediately credited me, overnighted another pair, and whacked off 25%. How awesome is that?! They even said they'd inspect the new pair for defects before it went out.

Well, whomever the inspector was should have their eyes examined. The new pair looked like WAY worse than the original pair. One shoe looked like that wrinkled up CXL PTB that was posted a couple weeks ago, and the other shoe had the grain issue but in a different spot. Thank goodness I hadn't shipped the original pair back yet because they're at least wearable. I could complain to J Crew again, but I'm happy with the discount and am at peace with the grain thing. While I fault J Crew a bit, once again Alden should have never let the one pair out of the factory.

Anyone else order these and receive a pair where the grain pattern wasn't completely pressed into the leather?

^ unfortunately nowadays it seems that defective pairs appear just as frequently as well constructed ones

Yeah, I'm not usually a complainer and go with the Uncle Mac attitude of "They're not Rembrandts," but both pairs I received were sucky.

Was the issue isolated to an area where the leather is stretched? I thought that normally happened on the toe area and such.

Interestingly enough, the toes have really nice graining. I think that might be a function of the grain being a bit finer. Almost every pair of scotchgrain shoes I own have "flatter" graining on the toe from stretching. These particular shoes have the crappy leather on the outside quarter just behind the lacing holes. The shoe that was wrinkled like crazy looked like it was a combination of poor leather and lousy lasting, almost like there was a bunch of excess leather in the arch.
