My j.crew #8 captoe boots are scheduled to come tomorrow, and i'm seeking advise on how to "set the crease" in a vamp area. I really, really dislike excessive rippling and remember reading somewhere about using a pencil to help "guide" the formation of the initial creases so they are somewhat symmetrical. Here's a description of the method i nabbed from another forum:

So, has anyone used this with success? Any tips or other suggestions? TIA

Edit: Here's a link with more details from Tom at LS: http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/...Alden-Chukka-ideal-crease-Japanese-Pen-Method
You might luck out and get them already creased. Mine arrived from J Crew that way...

My ranger moc collection. Sometimes they're called moc toe.
700

Ranger Moc in loden green, van last, water lock sole
Ranger Moc in reverse chamois, van last, water lock sole
Ranger Moc in snuff suede, barrie last, plantation crepe sole

That's a nice collection. I have only one ranger moc, from the Cape Cod collection. Nothing special for this group, but I've gotten a lot of great wear out of them and they are still going.

What are the details on where you picked up each? I'll assume Loden = Union Made. The one on the Barrie seems unusual. I think Van is standard for this style, isn't it?

Thank you. Yes, the Loden came from Union Made, the second from Roden Gray, and the last from the Bureau Belfast. Most of the moc-toes I've seen have the van, but all the moc-toes at The Bureau have the barrie.

Black shell Indy boots today. I'm a huge proponent of the machine stitching on the Indys, and I love these, my #8s and whiskey ones, all with that stiching. I even sent my cigar pair with hand stiching to a good home (a fellow SFer, of course) last summer, and haven't regretted it for a second.

^ were they shell?
Yes.

As you can see, the right shoe is still slightly lighter, but I used dark brown polish to balance them out. Sorry, I do not have any before pics.

Thanks - I like them too! I do not, however, know where my wife got them. I'll ask and respond here later.
