Why does it matter to Alden whether it's the most complicated to brew, considering Horween is doing the brewing? Genuinely curious here. If Alden can get their hands on #4 shell (and I  imagine they would have first dibs), why wouldn't they take the chance? I can't imagine the dyeing process making it more fragile.

do you think #4 might cost more? maybe the profit margins arent as good?

As well you should. While there are varying opinions on this site relative to Alden QC, as has been pointed out in a recent post, most members are civil with their posts. Every once in a while you get the 'ridicoulous' comment from someone. Ignore it and move on.

Perhaps it's the rare shell shortage rearing its ugly head. :censored:

Very happy with two recent acquisitions: unlined Leyden tan suede Dover from TSM seconds list and the Harrison Limited CXL chukka.

But today, off on a Day Trip.

I will also state that I have no clue why Cigar is a rare shell color. It doesn't look particularly light to me that would cause only 1% of shells being candidates for the color due to its inability to hide imperfections. I guess they know more than I do.
I don't think the rare colors are "rare" due to issues finding enough quality shells to make flawless product suitable for whiskey, Ravello etc. I think it is simply that, away from this forum, most of the target market that owns 1 to 3 pairs prefer color 8. Stated another way, I think history has proven to the Alden Company (again before the rare color craze maybe created by this forum) that if they put color 8 and all the rare colors on the shelf at the same time, the average buyer will choose king 8 and it would historically far outsell the others.

Perhaps but that's the reason I enjoy thus thread more than the rest of SF.

I'm the same way. I realize that some of Aldens offerings aren't as elegant looking as most of the foreign brands but Aldens just seem to be more comfortable for my feet.

^^^ I think you are absolutely correct Coinop.  The first time I saw ravello (LHS) in a store (Sherman Bros in Philly about four years ago), I was very unimpressed by its somewhat matted light brown appearance.  I thought to myself, is this really what the SFers are crazy about??  They looked the least impressive of the shell cordovan on display.  However, after seeing what the patina looks like after some wear and exposure, ravello looks pretty impressive.  Pictures online convinced me to give them a try when they became available.  Today I probably reach for my color 8 more frequently just because i have more of it and it pairs well with more of my combinations.

I mentioned something similar to that a few days ago in here. If not for the rarity factor, I wonder what would be the most popular color? If they were all readily available I'm pretty sure #8 would win by a large margin.

Ha! I thought the same thing when I was in Alden DC a month or two back and Kathy showed me the Ravello medallion toe everyone was going crazy over. Jim also showed me the Cigar color that they were going to be making CT boots of and I was like - "I'll take the #8, it looks better."

Thanks for all the #4 Love gents. I was a lucky man indeed, but we all know that Color 8 is King.

Friday casual. Snuff Suede. Have a great day gentlemen. Stay sharp!
