This post reminded me of a 'conversation' my wife and I had a few days ago. I came home from work the other day to a pleasant early delivery surprise from TSM. The box was in the study which is where my closet and shoes reside. On the desk was 4 pair of color 8 shoes and my wife dared me to explain how any one was different from the other 3......

Even she conceded the obvious difference in the Epalaut Alt Weins, but she felt pretty confident that there were no differences in the other 3. Of course, it was a conversation that I welcomed as the differences to me were so obvious. The basketball equivalent of a layup.

The reason this post reminded me of the conversation is that of the four, the jcrew's on plantation are chunkier than the others and I would prefer that they were a little sleeker. However they are easily my most worn of the 4 precisely because of the purplish hue that you mention. I love that deep deep purple-ish patina they have developed. It really is a matter of taste and preference.

Kind of a long-winded way of saying don't try to figure out why others prefer one over the other. Buy what you like and if you're purchasing Alden's, it is highly unlikely that those you interact with on a daily basis will be anything but impressed.

Thank you. I do it a lot because I know there are soo few pictures out there. I think this forum produces 80% of Alden pics in the world.

tifosi, if you refer to your syllabus for this class please note that there is a quiz on Alden style numbers scheduled for Monday.

For sure mdubs. Either your on to something or on something, but I find it funny that when I google search pics of Alden shoes on the web I find photos of my own shoes. It must be Obama and the NSA trying to track me down.

Thanks very much MrDV. I too am enamored of the shoeshines of NAMOR, mdubs, and Patrick_B. I was thinking of wiping down my J Crew pct's and then using a very little Saphir Reno before just putting a touch of Alden #8 paste wax on the cap-toe and buffing the bejesus out if them.

Thanks Be. Buying a scotch grain calfskin boot was a bit of a divergence for me. However, I absolutely love them. It is my first UK made shoe/boot and C&J does a fantastic job. I'm very tempted to get the Harlech boot in shell one of these days.

RE: the shine on the PCT boots, I'm still a bit surprised at how well they shined up. I didn't keep them that shiny for long but they sure looked pretty in the sun.

I'll pull a couple all nighters this weekend and get all these style numbers memorized.

In my class, we go beyond mere rote memorization/recall and seek the analysis and synthesis in Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning.  Be prepared to write responses to prompts such as...

-To what extent are the price differences between Alden, AE, Carmina, and C&J Shell Cordovan shoes and boots warranted?

-Assess the validity of the following statement...  Bluchers are inherently casual shoes that should not be worn with suits.

-Evaluate the relative importance of factors contributing to the decline in the American shoe industry over the last 60 years.

Be sure to develop strong thesis statements that directly respond to the prompt.  Lastly, be prepared to orally defend your papers to the class!

Is understanding the proper fitting of the Barrie vs Plaza lasts a prerequisite for this course?

I too like both. Although admittedly nearly all of my calf is non-Alden (but I have some Alden calf and have nothing against it).

An argument can be made that a well rounded shoe/boot wardrobe contains shell, calf, scotch grain/country calf, and suede.
