I agree! I'm a fan!

FYI - Leffot's taking pre-orders for Color 8 Unlined Dovers (antique edge) now.

Arrival is “anticipated” late spring 2014, however it may be longer.

Bring on the tanker pre-order!  The unlined antique dovers have quickly become one of my favorites, cant lose

Some of the chukkas would also be a great call. Color 8 looks amazing in a chukka!

They look more like #8 in that pic.

Sorry, poor lighting, but it's definitely among the newer, darker Cigar shell - this is next to my Alden for J. crew #8 cap toes.

Looks like color 8 to me. What's the model number inside the boot? I will get to the bottom of it if you provide me that.

Whether color 8 or cigar, it is a great boot.

FWIW, I would recommend you keep the edging as-is.

I was in a small local store today and found these poor guys on clearance. They had some shop wear and looked like they had been around awhile (along with a tassel loafer). I never wear 10.5D, but the Hampton fit great with thick socks. Another price drop and I may consider giving them some proper TLC.

The 990 & 9901 are like a two lane comfort cruise! I love love love mine!

When it comes to walking all day, almost no Alden cordovan shoe is as comfortable as the 990. In either double leather or commando sole, the cork bed and the sole will let you walk miles with little discomfort. The shoe feels extremely solid.

The flex sole and unlined cordovan results in the dover being a much more unstructured shoe, and walking around all day in the shoe can make your feet feel a bit tired. In addition your feet feel more feedback on the flex sole, so you notice things like cobblestone a lot more. In a way the flex leather sole can even feel softer than rubber soles such as the soles you find on Sperry or Quoddy boat shoes.

In addition, the dover feels much colder in the kind of cold weather we are having now. It also probably feels less hot in the summer, which is an advantage.

The dover looks sleeker than the standard PTB, but it is still has the rounded barrie last. I think the classic 990/9901 looks very elegant.

Push comes to shove, I would rank the PTBs this way
1) Classic PTB on double leather sole (990,9901)
2) PTBs on commando soles (Alden of Carmel, etc)
3) Unlined PTBs

In fact, I am considering a 9901 or a black PTB on commando to supplement or replace my black cordovan unlined PTB.

Hope that helps

Great info, thanks for sharing. Just wanted to add a personal thumbs up for dainite. While Alden doesn't offer anything on dainite, it an aftermarket option from B. Nelson or other 3rd party cobbler. I recently bought the C&J Islay on dainite and find it an amazing sole in the rain and snow. I'm seriously considering re-soling my #8 PCT boots with dainite when they need it.

Crazy that you could have such a variety within a "single color" - what better way to increase your margins than to be able to say what you do is much more an art than a science.

Yeah, those boots look basically the same shade as my color 8 tankers. I don't recall a cigar wingtip boot on a commando sole being made.

As the boots look like they are in great shape, the only issue is that the price may have been bid up by people thinking they were cigar.

^^ 4461 is #8 Wingtip boot. Not sure about the rest of the numbers.

I'm branching out a little into Aldens after accumulating what I thought was a lifetime's worth of AEs (thanks but no thanks, SF!).  I rushed through Alden of Carmel's ordering process and didn't realize until they were en route that the calf captoe boots I had ordered were non-returnable.  So, I now have a good-sized credit with Adam and am trying to figure out how best to use it.

My obsession these days is with shell and both the AF111 (black PTB) and 1340 (black chukka) would fill holes in my collection.  Any reason why I wouldn't want to pull the trigger on one or the other of these?  Also, can anyone compare and contrast Alden and AE shell chukkas (what AE calls the Dundee)?  I know the former is two-eyelet and the latter is three . . . anything else I should know?

Fit-wise, I'm a perfect 9.5 E in the AE Dundees and the 1 last is probably my favorite last of theirs.  On the Alden side, I'm a comfy 9.5 D in the Trubalance, which is what the PTBs are on.  The chukkas are on the Barrie, but I gather that if I'm a 9.5 D on the Trubalance I should be on the Barrie as well.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom anyone cares to share!

I can't offer much advice but I have looked closely at the AF111 quite a few times. Nice looking cordovan shoe with the dover pattern, that would be my vote. Plus they usually have a few listed in their overstock section for lower price.

Get the 1340 over the AF111. While a stock model, it is a classic.

Shoes on the TruB last have always looked a bit off to my eye. But others may like them ...
