Great shoes. The flat welt is a nice touch.

The red lining from Leffot is pretty great.

You are about 15 min from me. Small world.

I'm thinking of sending my Alden for BB Plain Toes in to Alden Restoration. I really like the idea of getting back a "new" shoe, however, I'm hoping they'll refinish them as well? I know it's common for them to do that - the question I have is, is that the default. I know plenty of folks on here want their patina to stay the same, I however - don't.

I got the restoration bag in the mail - it's $165 and that price is good until March 31st. I can't imagine Alden making that a lower price...

Well, my situation is a little different since I'm always in between sizes.  I can go 1/2 size down and wear the 7.5D on Barrie, or I can sometimes go a full size down and wear a 7D on Barrie.  For boots with thicker socks, I typically prefer the 7.5D.  For dress shoes, I often go with the 7D.  It really just depends though.  I would say that you should go 1/2 size down as usual.

That price will never go down. It is up from 159 last year (less 10 if you don't want trees). They will refinish them.

^Amen to that.  Natural law of 'we can charge more'

Great shoes. The flat welt, which makes them different than the 9751, makes them slightly dressier than the 9751. Of course they have the non-stock red lining too. Enjoy.

From the consumer's perspective, that's a reasonable price for shell shoes, but Alden also charges the same $165 for non-shell shoes.

Shell - new at retail ~$700, with 50% retail margin, that's about $350 wholesale.
Non-shell - new at retail ~$500, with 50% retail margin, that's about $250 wholesale.

Factory restoration ~ $165 for shell and non-shell. There is no retail markup. So, $165 (minus $10 trees) go to the factory.

Bottom line: $155 vs $250 vs $350

Is it fair to compare wholesale value with the restoration retail value?

99% of the population is most likely buying at the retail price (when buying new), so the comparison should be apples to apples.

Additionally, are you sure they are actually getting a 50% gross margin on the shoes, or is that just an assumption?

Doesn't Alden also pay for shipping both ways for restorations? If yes then they are making less than $155...
