FWIW, and others are entitled to their own opinions, I work with attorneys and financiers from the world's top firms (Skadden, Latham, Quinn Emanuel, Goldman Sachs, Oaktree, Colony, Blackstone, etc) and cannot think of one person at any of these firms who even knows the difference between the two, let alone look at someone funny for not adhering to this nonsensical standard.

Agreed completely. I worked at one of those firms for years, and I can guarantee you that most of the partners would have been confused about the difference (construction, formality, whatever) between bluchers and bals.

I have a pair of Alden 405s that I love.  It definitely took some time to break them in where I really thought I bought a size too small in the beginning.  I usually wear 10 in athletic shoes and went with size 9 in 405s.

I recently got the cordovan captoe blucher as a gift in the same size 9.  They fit pretty tight on my feet and can't figure out if I need to break them in or size up?

I'm SURE there is a member on the board who owns both Indy 405s and a captoe blucher.  do you recommend staying with same size?

Thanks!

Size up. Shell doesn't really stretch like cxl or calfskin, and your feet will lose the battle, or you'll end up selling them before too long. When between sizes, I err on the the side of looser, rather than tighter, with shell cordovan.

After much trepediation, I sent my whiskey PTB's to Alden for recrafting. My fear was that they would darken them and I didn't want that. While yours are definitely darker than mine, I will be absolutely ecstatic if mine come back looking anything like these. Yours are stunning.

I guess I can't blame you, considering that I'm new to this forum and have little credibility. So, just for kicks, here's me on that same hill near the aptly-named town of Scala overlooking Ravello. (Apologies for the beater clothes and shoes. They were my hiking clothes for the day.)

And with that said, I think I'll just stick to posting photos of shoes from now on.

I'm sure you'll love it, Mike. An entire week in just Ravello would be a bit much considering everything else that is nearby, but I'm sure you were just using the term loosely :)

I never doubted that it was your pic when you posted it.  I just thought that it was funny in the Haha sense of the word.

If I did doubt you , the second pic would do little to convince me that it really was you who took the original pic, because the face is blocked out and I don't know what you look like anyway.  Or maybe you just inserted yourself in to the image.

Doesn't matter, either way, I believe you and it is not important.

I assume those are on the Aberdeen Last?

I'm a 10 in sneakers, 9.5 won't fit.

I'm a 9D in Aberdeen, and most other Alden lasts.

My brannock size is 9.5D

My Trubalance size is most likely be 9C, but I have never tried anything on.  I'm 9C in Barrie and Van, and folks generally take the same size on those lasts.

It is generally the case that if an individual is a 9D on the Trubalance, that they are a 9.5D on the Aberdeen.  Many go up .5 for sneakers from their Brannock size , like I do.

So in short. You probably need a 9.5D

A lot of people find that they get the best fit by getting a narrow or wide width in a certain size, or by going smaller but wider, or larger but narrower.

Where exactly is it tight?  All around?

No need to apologize.  This sort of thing happens from time to time on internet forums.

Enjoy your weekend.

Beautiful PTBs. Rather dark for Whiskey, someone said these were recrafted. I have seen some posts back talking about Alden's liberal use of dark dyes on recrafts. Regardless, they do still look awesome!

I've searched for about 20 minutes trying to find a definitive step-by-step guide on cleaning Indy boots, but I'm either blind or I'm just not looking hard enough. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.

Applying product is not always necessary.  The horsehair brush usually gets good results alone.

I posted before/after shots of some CXL boat shoes that received this maintenance regime in the Rancourt thread last spring and summer.

I would love to see pictures sometime during this weekend. I'll try to post mine tomorrow.

This is my favorite pair. Even before I was an Alden fan, I loved the look of shortwing bluchers. This pair, being Ravello Shell, sealed the deal for me.

I will never part with these.

I'll also use this as my 'ravello week' entry satisfied.gif
