How do Alden boots compare to Vibergs and Red Wings?

I got my Christmas present today...#8 Tankers from Leffot as part of the last pre-order. I was in on the very first one, but the larger sizes came with the standard black sole. They went back, I waffled for a few years, but am happy I gave them another go. Truly one of Alden's all time best. There's another pre-order up on the website. Take advantage. The price keeps going up.

Merry Christmas!

I just received my first pair of cordovan. The dark spots on the shoes seems to have been caused from leaking tanning oils. Should i return them?

Nearly all color8 shoes/boots have this kind of dye stain. And the stain should only be visible under certain lighting.

Just wear them in good health.

I don't know how stains are acceptable when you're paying $800 for shoes.

Outstanding boots, Uncle. I may be in the minority, but I do love the machine stitching on the toe. Classy as always.

^ Pure speculation, but I've noticed the #8 I've seen lately has been much darker than in the past, almost to the point of looking like cigar. The tankers I just got are very dark. Perhaps they're trying to mask this blotchiness through applying more dye.

i agree that stains are pretty much unacceptable with $800 shoes. that being said, it looks like the stain really only comes out when there's strong light (flash/sun), and with shell, we're beggars, not choosers. some of the bb #8 models that i've had my eyes on aren't even available! i'd keep them and wear them.

Those look like color 8 lwb, which are readily available. For common shoes, I say if something bothers you enough, return them. That said many Alden cordovan pairs have a slight flaw of some sort, and the spot you mention won't really be noticeable after a lot of wears.

A special thanks to all my forum friends who have helped enable and foster this wonderful hobby/addiction/pastime; for the tolerance and patience of our wives, girlfriends, and partners who allow us to pursue our interests, often at the expense of logic; and last but not least, for the horses, who literally handed over their asses to make us happy.

May the new year bring us an abundance of rare (and black/color 8) shell cordovan!  In all seriousness, god bless us all with good health and good times with family and friends.  Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, etc...

First high quality shoe:  J&M Black Calf Blucher circa 1982 (father passed them down to me when I got married 15 years later; he wore them about 5 times in those 15 years; they're still going strong!)

First Alden:  J Crew Tobacco waxed LWB (serious gateway shoe)

First Shell:  Cigar LWB (Alden Carmel)
