Maybe if you can keep it to around 12 people you have a better shot. I think there were over 30 people on the Thor boot list, and she was having trouble getting an order that large confirmed for a rare shell color.

Yeah, when I was at the shop on Monday, she was encouraging me to try on Plaza shoes. So I think she is willing. But, yes, part of her strategy is to keep the runs small. This is a new design to her. I got 25 PMs. Gonna organize it tonight to see which are multiples from same people.

I think the Alden NYC cigar/whiskey runs were 20 pair each? So it looks like some small runs may be making it out of the Alden factory. Makes sense with so many retailers wanting rare shell shoes.

Alden used to do MTOs a few years back... Now they only do special makeups from time-to-time for retailers.

I call around all the retailers every two months or so to see what they have in, are getting in, or have a list for... Very expensive habit.

Uncle Mac is an accountant, that's all we know.  He owns an undisclosed pair of Aldens, and he won't tell you exactly how many.  He, plus a few other thread heavyweights, decline to state the size of their collection, but I think it's safe to say that the top 5 guys on this thread are all north of 50 pairs each.  Hell, I'm a nobody and own 22 pairs myself...

Uncle Mac can get pretty much any shoe he wants.

MTO for Alden these days is a very short and exclusive VIP list, reserved only for their most dedicated customers.

Before you ask, it's invite only.

So do you guys have a custom built shelving/storage unit for your Alden and other shoe collection? Do you have them behind glass frames to prevent dust accumulation? I'm interested in the archival and retrieval aspect, wonder how Fok handles his entire collection now. He must have them alphabetized by brand then color/design.

are you trying to imply people don't wear their shoes? if you are simply asking what to do with shoes one is not wearing, well box them or a giant shoe rack. I brush off the dust and call it a day.

I assumed he was asking what to do with shoes you're not wearing. If someone has over 50 pair, then there are surely pairs in that collection that can go 2-3 months (or possibly more) without being worn. If one is not using shoe bags or storing them in a box, and simply leaving them out on a rack for easy access, they'll definitely get dusty. But like you said, a quick brushing and wipe down and they're good to go for the most part.

Mac is a gentleman from an older generation so he doesn't respond to queries about his collection because to him it would seem boastful and distasteful. Suffice to say, he has en extensive collection with many unique makeups that were done when Alden took custom orders, which was not so long ago. Folks that have been around SF for a few years will remember that Alden custom orders were how Foo was able to get his "oneshoe" collection of plaza longwings. Anyone could make custom orders then but I guess the program became out of control so Alden no longer offers it.

Interesting, I've not heard about this before. Is this an educated guess or do you have evidence of this mysterious, black ops MTO program?
