So at first I had a pair of whiskey longwings where the left shoe was 2 shades of orange. Now I have no idea what I have.

I'd say you have a great looking pair of reddish ravello...

Also looks similar to my Alden for J Crew tobacco calf.

I think they look great.  I hope you enjoy them.  All the best...

I agree with RTP, the longwings look great. But as you point out, they no longer look whiskey, almost ravello. Not even close to the same color as those gorgeous indy's you have in the family shot. Someone just coined the phrase 'whiskey-ness' and while it hasn't made its way to Mariam-Webster, I'm sure anyone on this site knows what it means. Next to 8, whiskey is easily my favorite shade because of its 'whiskey-ness'. If sending mine to alden jeopardizes that, I'll live with them they way they are.

they almost look like #4, sorta like those refinished shortwings posted a while back...

Not sure whose quote this actually was (mtc2000 or scb), but the wording is hilarious.  Sorry, not trying to minimize your frustration with what happened but your wording was priceless.  Thanks for the laugh on Thanksgiving.

Anybody else think the bulge in the ankle looks strange? Am I tying my 403's too tight? Or is my foot too wide?

I don't know if these boots fit your foot properly. One thing I use to judge fit is how close the boot closes when laced tight. Yours appear to be fairly open, so around the arch and foot area I would say they fit ok to maybe a little small. Do they feel too narrow where your foot is widest near the ball of your foot behind the big toe? If this area fits good, then I would ask how they fit around your heel? Based on those keys areas and your answers would determine if the bulge is an issue? Some of the bulge should settle down as the leather breaks in. However...no doubt it's appears looking at it that's real loose above your arch to ankle area. It could be the last on this boot simply does not fit your foot. For me the key is the width. If possible...your might need to go down a 1/2 size, but 1 width wider. I feel fairly safe saying the boot you have now is not too wide, if it was it would be closed more in the lace area.

See Ya,
Steve

I understand your frustration. I tend to agree with others that end result looks pretty good, but it's certainly not whiskey anymore. Only you can decide, but it's a nice looking shoe.

See Ya,
Steve

You stand that close, and you'll very soon be frying some shell.

Some proper Whiskey-ness.

Pictures were taken when they were new. That was some three, four years ago.
