Zippy-thanks for your help. I ended up getting a wing tip boot from Shoemart because the chromexcel wing tips I wanted from LSBH is gone in my size. PS anyone here use the Alden shoe care products? Be it the cream or wax?

I just took the plunge and purchased the shortwings in suede from Leather Soul. I live in NYC and battle poor weather from time to time. Just a question, what do you guys suggest I do to "protect" these shoes? Should I use a suede spray? If so, what kind is best? I have heard that some of them can degrade the leather.

I use AE suede spray, just spray it once in a while. I didn't see any harm on the suede. Also, I would just avoid wearing them in the rain if you want them to be in a good shape. Suede will wear out faster, it is the nature of the material so there is nothing you can do about it.

Quick question. I've tried on the Standard Indy 405's but have yet to put my hands on the 403. Any comparisons on the hand of the leather as well as thickness/durability? Cheers.

ugghhh... just find pics online of used Indys and see which type of leather you like the look of better once it's aged. In terms of thickness I've handled both and they are about the same. Duability I think are about the same for all Indy boots, I mean, are you grinding the uppers against cement on a daily basis or something?

i prefer chromexcel. just cause.

Sorry if I struck the wrong chord MiniW. If the aging of the leather was my primary concern then I wouldn't have asked. I've never owned a pair of Aldens and unlike many on this forum, it's an investment for me in every sense of the word. Good to know that the thickness is about the same. I do prefer the Chromexcel because I do appreciate history and craft, and Horween seems to epitomize both. Leaning towards it...

Durability is probably about the same but I do find the Chromexcel version to be thicker and it has a different feel to it. Both are nice and my Chromexcel boots are Roys, not Indys, but I prefer the Chromexcel overall I think. It's awfully close though and I prefer the sole on the Roys so that may color my opinion. The standard 405 is nice because it is, well, the standard...it's sort of the iconic Indy boot.

I've owned both. I currently have the 403's which I got after I sold my 405's. Honestly, right now I think the 405's are better. Chromexcel is a little thicker and it feels greasier, but has the same durability IMO. Actually, if you count how fast it scuffs up and wrinkles, I'd say it's LESS durable. It doesn't look nice for as long as the 405 calf. I think your decision should probably be based on gut reaction to color and if you want the boots to look more scuffed. On a side note Vamks, I'm a huge fan of your Dry Bones! I looked at those pics for hours it seems like. I bought a pair after seeing those! They don't look nearly as nice as yours but are fading beautifully.

i, personally, also thought the Chromexcel Indy looked niiice__ until a friend bought the JCrew x Indy Chromexcels just a month & a half ago . don't know if this was just an accidental stroke of bad fortunate or there's really a problem with the leather match up [ei., on Indy, in particular]. i felt really bad cuz i recommended it to him__ since he liked the Black Indy i bought from several mos ago. mine's doing very well and i luv em more now that they've really become very comfortable.

You sure? Those really look like my snap last brown suede blucher. I called Alden to verify the last on these because it fits so well:

sorry for my annoyance but this questions seems to be repeated every 2-3 weeks, and I think the answer is that the 405 is no better or worse than the 403. They are just slightly different. So really I feel that the decision as to which to buy is based on personal preference no matter what people have to say about the shoes. The only good thing I can say is that thanks to the popularity at this time, it shouldn't be hard finding the pair you want in your size.

I would be curious to know... I have read in a number of threads that they were Aberdeen-lasted, but I would guess the shell ones and the suede ones are on the same last. FWIW, I have never looked at the BB photos of the Snap last perf toes side by side with the cap toe bluchers - and I have to agree, they appear to be the same.

The consensus was as follows:
BB Tassel loafer = Aberdeen
BB Penny unlined loafer = Van
BB Blucher = Barrie
BB Straight tip = Aberdeen
BB Perforated cap toe = Snap
BB Wingtip bal = Plaza

I have Alden black cap toes on the Hampton last, and Alden for BB black cap toes, and they are definitely not the same. The BB ones seem bulbous and rather inelegant.

Cheers for that jason. I appreciate that a lot, glad I helped influence someone. And thanks for the advice as well, although it definitely made my decision tougher. Thanks for the responses guys.

I have a pair of the BB cap toe bluchers in Shell and Calf. I confirmed with Alden that they're both on the Snap last. I don't own a pair of the suede cap toes but the look like the snap to me as well.
