As for people that buy other shoes having different social groups, I don't know about that. I have as many CJ as I do Aldens, haven't experienced and quality control issues with CJ however.

People are more than 10 times likely to complain about something than to extol its virtues, though, so complaints always look overblown on forums, etc. I would say this is the most likely reason.

My prediction: The QC issues are a slow leak- a) the person doing the job possibly stopped giving a shit and b) given the popularity of Alden in more mainstream stores they're probably under pressure to deliver a larger quantity than they're used to. If you have a quota and you need to ship that shoddy shoe to make it, you ship it. As it seems to be a very "community oriented" factory I think the QC guy probably knows the assembly people and would feel bad for rejecting their craftsmanship, particularly if they're going to grab a beer after work. Just a guess though.

I will say though that 100% of the shoes I've returned due to defects have been Alden.

I'm not picking on you, but do you think the extremely closed lacing on that boot indicates they're too large for you? I often see shoes laced this tightly and I always wonder. A number of my shoes are at least one width too large and none of them come close to lacing all the way closed like that.

These are definitely the right size for me. I have fairly wide, flat feet that don't have a lot of....height? I find that on a lot of my shoes and boots that when I get the proper width for the base of my foot, the uppers will be large enough that the lacing is fairly closed.

I guess that makes sense. I have narrow feet with a lot of asymmetric height, so my shoes always tend to be too wide while still lacing fairly far apart.

360 degree flat welt on the Leffot's. It might not seem like much, but the little things can make all the difference sometimes. Also, I might be wrong but I'd guess that the laces are the same color and just appear to be different in the pictures. I don't think Alden has a slightly different lace color that it ships. Like I said, I could be wrong about that.

I still haven't seen an entire shoe or boot in person in the natural Chromexcel, but from the swatch I don't think it's that close to whiskey. To me, the Chromexcel is a bit "cooler" in tone to the "warmer" Whiskey. But hey, what do I know???
