The J Crew impact continues to be a bit overstated here, IMO. J Crew sells Aldens in a limited amount of urban stores, online and in the catalogue... What Alden shoes they do sell appear to be widely available (CXL Indy boots) or exclusives (Tobacco and Brown Calf Longwings). I guess they do sell some other suede and cordovan models, but it is not like J Crew is getting a bunch of rare cordovan orders while smaller retailers are not. Even when they do get rarer shoes (like the ravello longwings with brass eyelets), they aren't even widely sold. Brooks Brothers has been selling Aldens for years. I think it is just pure supply and demand.
Good points, indeed supply and demand.
Yes, Leffot does take "pre-orders" for non-common sizes, but those do not fall in the "confirmed" allocations. There might not be any lead time advantage.
We, the consumers may want to believe otherwise, but in reality, I don't think shell shoes take absolute priority in the production queue. Shell or non-shell, exotic or not, if production is backlogged, even if they have the material, they can't catch up. I think there is already indication that it is happening even for non-shell models.Edited by mtc2000 - 8/24/13 at 12:51pm
