I have a pair of brown Chromexcel Indys (J. Crew version) that I believe are defective. The left foot, when I walk in the shoes, is higher than the other by around a quarter of a inch (maybe half an inch?), which, you know, causes a great deal of pain in my foot and knee. Overall the left shoe feels like the footbed is much higher and tighter than the right shoe, even though when you line the shoes up side to side they look identical. When I was first at the store and breaking these in, I attributed this to the fact that the shoes are handmade and that they needed to be broken in before a proper evaluation was given.

Well, they're broken in, and I get pain in my left foot and knee still when I walk in them. The pain is pretty dull, but obviously it shouldn't be happening. Any ideas as to my options?

A belated thanks to all of you who replied in response to my predicament... I wound up getting J.Crew to give me a refund for these. Alden, in the meantime, had gotten back to me and offered to take the shoes in for repair, but by then they had already been returned. I assume they'll get back to Alden, but will be J.Crew's problem instead of mine. Of course, now I'm Indy-less, but some enterprising forum members have already PM'ed me to solve that problem...

Thanks!

Any ideas how to darken the leather welt on a pair of Indys? They look too "new" to me.

Which Indy and do you mean the contrast stitching? The stitching is very easy to darken. You can do it with Obenauf's LP, a colored wax, blood, dirt.....

They will get there.

Stephen at Leffot put up a very informative video. I'd say you can skip the polishing mat and dauber, but everything else he mentions is essential, especially the Saphir Renovateur. For wax, Kiwi is fine, and you'd use black, obviously, instead of the burgundy he uses. http://blog.leffot.com/2010/02/03/polishing-cordovan/

For black especially I have been using a barely damp T-Shirt as well. It seems to work really well If the T-Shirt is the right dampness then you should not have to dry off the shoe when you are done.

Also, and I have not tried this, if you get a scratch in cordovan you can use the rounded bottom of a spoon to smooth out the scratch. Now I would not do that in an area with brogueing but it apparently can help you out. I scuffed the hell out of the toe of my cordovan Darlton wingtips and used a dark brown shoe cream and now I cannot even tell where it happened.

If one were to resole their Indys and wanted to end up with a lighter weight boot while still maintaining the look, what would be the sole of choice ?

Thanks,
Tod

I do not find the sole to be very heavy but you could consider the lug sole. I find the lug sole to be pretty fugly and I am not sure if Alden will do it on an Indy. The single oiled leather sole is also a possibility and I would prefer it to double leather or lug sole.

I personally would stay with the Commando Sole for that particular boot.
