Alden J crew Cadet Shell for my sons Highschool graduation

Does anyone know if Alden's sizing differs at all between which retailers they make shoes for? I'm sort of new to Alden, but so far I've heeded the advice to go half size down on the Barrie lasts and have received different fits from 3 different pairs ordered from 3 different retailers all of which are size 10. I remember reading on the forums before that Alden for Brooks Brothers, at least one particular shoe in Barrie last, ran TTS.

There shouldn't be a big difference between retailers if the shoe is the same last. What you may be describing is a difference in fit between two Barrie models (for example, many report Barrie boots for snugger than Barrie longwings)

It's been a while since someone shared that so perhaps j crew has changed their policy. However, it may be as simple as trying to get a different customer service rep on the phone in hopes of a different outcome. It certainly can't hurt to try sending an email or calling back at a later date.

I'm with you on the try-on markings. It would bother me at first but I'd get over it quickly after wearing once. Congrats on the new acquisition.

Thanks Patrick. I just wanted the best shot at making my first black shells look mirror-ish--like so many of yours we've marveled at!

Congrats on your son's HS grafuation! You make me wish it wasn't a rainy day here so I could take my cadets out for their maiden voyage. I might have to wait for my kindergarten we to graduate next month wink.gif

In my experience Barrie high boots (not chukkas) are more snug than Barrie shoes.

I've noticed this too, but what about shortwing bluchers (not shortwing boots) on the Barrie last?

I have two pairs of shortwings on pre-order from LS. Can those of you with shortwings say whether they fit like a LWB or more like a wingtip high boot (eg, Brixtons)?

Big thank you to Katch for the heads up on the Ravello @ the J Crew Ludlow shop.   I called and they had 2 pairs available, one happened to be my size.   When I got down there they offered me 10% off because my shoes were the floor model, and when they rang me up they ended up giving me 20% off,   Score!!    So I ended up paying $575 before tax, amazing deal.    They have one pair of 11Ds left if anyone is interested.   This is my second pair of Aldens.   I bought my first Aldens (brown chromexcel lwb's) earlier this week and thought I'd have to wait a couple years for Ravello which was my first choice.

Here they are...

Hanover Shell Cordovan Plain Toe Blucher - PTB - Horween #8 - NOS - New - 8.5D

PSA - the above model is on ebay. They look untouched. Starting bid is 360 and BIN price of 550. No one has bid and it ends in about 6 hours. IMO they are worth the BIN price. Somebody will be getting these for a steal. They are TTS and are every bit the equal to Alden's 990 (which I have).

I am not an ebay seller and I have no idea who the seller is.

I am posting this only because early in the week there was discussion of vintage Florsheim and vintage Hanover.

Probably the best deal I have ever gotten - on any pair of shoes anywhere - was my purchase of a pair of NOS vintage Hanover PTBs in color 4 - for an absurb price of $240-ish (3 years ago or so).

Slightly more snug than LWBs but not enough to change the size.

be careful with that seller, looks like he's got some bad feedback on the same pair of shoes listed previously.

Many erroneously believe the shell PTB at BB (made by Alden) is made on the Barrie last (and they then claim it runs TTS). It is not made on the Barrie last. Perhaps this is what you read .......

My experience is that the LWB is the sole outlier.  My PTB's and boots on the barrie all fit pretty much the same.  The LWB is slightly wider but not enough to make me size differently.  (I can't speak for the chukka as I have none in my collection)

Anyone here ever own a pair of Heinrich Dinkelacker shell cordovan shoes?  Interesting looking short wing bluchers with a triple leather sole.  Check them out...
