My Whiskey Indys from the MTO thread arrived yesterday and they look absolutely fantastic. I know that some folks were upset by the order not coming out as expected (closed heal instead of 360º welt and speedhooks instead of all eyelets) but those things don't really bother me. Both were options that I was originally indifferent about but I think now I actually like the closed heal on these better than I would have a 360º welt for a couple of reasons: First, I already have a pair of color #8 Indys with the 360º and second, I think the closed heal makes these look a tiny bit sleeker.

In the end though, the main reason these differences didn't bother me is because I have a relatively small and wide foot so I looked at the special order mainly as a guarantee that I was going to be able to get a whiskey shell cordovan Indy Boot in something other than a "D" width.

I've had these on for just a few hours now and it's amazing how quickly the creases are showing up. I imagine this to be an attribute of the whiskey color which is much lighter than any of the cigar or color #8 that I have. Once the fog goes away and the sun comes, I'll have to try to get a picture outside later to really show off the creasing.

FYI, I spoke with Kathy at Alden, even though those Whiskey Aldens were MTO, she ordered extras for the Alden store as well (I think maybe one pair per size) that weren't reserved, get on them if you want a pair.

the 404's are great!! they were the first pair of shoes I ever put on that were comfortable right out of the box -
if you'd like another (better looking, imho) option, check out The Bureau's Alden Kudu boot:

http://www.thebureaubelfast.com/shop/product/1898/alden-the-bureau-kudu-boot/

I saw some posts on the Bureau boot when I searched the thread. And I agree, the look/style is more attractive. Unfortunately, at 379GBP + 30GBP shipping, that's about $200 more than the 404. And I don't know if there will be an import duty. You've given me something to think about though.

I thought these cigars were arriving in April. I try to limit my shoe purchases to one per month, but the past few months stuff has just been falling out of the sky. The problem is that there are so many unique makeups out there, and they all have something to offer.

I still think my Alden collection is way behind a bunch of people here (mac, CTYGGG, zipphy, etc). But like I said in one of my recent posts, it's time to scale back, especially since i am set for the summer with all the suede makeups. My next cordovan shoe will likely be a RL penny loafer on sale in May.

It's not about quantity, it's about quality. There are SF'ers out there who have far better Alden collections than mine.

You have a great Alden collection & a keen eye. I always appreciate it when you post up pics, you're a true asset to this forum & I look forward to seeing your next acquisition. That is all carry on.

P.S. I think Mac & Zipphy have the best collections that we've seen posted, but I suspect that Horsehide does too if he'd ever share pics…

add sf'er men's gaga to that list. his collection was both as unique and rare as it was large.
