That sounds like one hell of an extensive line-up, Sir.

They're all boots as I rarely wear shoes and when I first got into boots, I went crazy and bought like 20 pairs in the first year.  As I gravitated from fashion/Italian boots to AE and Alden, I've sold some of my earlier purchases and now focus mostly on Alden and some AE.  But I did just buy a pair of the Oak Street Bookmaker PT trench boots.  They are an awesome rugged boot.  I don't wear black much but Context has an exclusive on the OSB PT trench boot in black with natural edging that is very tempting.  But all in all, Alden is still my favorite for boots, especially in shell.  Going to London in a few months and want to see what I can find on Jermyn St.  Talk on this thread about English boots has me interested.

Epaulet never made a snuff PTB, only an LWB, but other than that I think most of the details are the same. Could be wrong tho, I haven't seen either in person

Don't stop posting them on account of me.  I just think the Modified sounds more exotic after seeing so many pics of the J Crews.

Modified, but only because I'm sick of that J Crew Cap Toe after seeing it on this thread every day.

I have both.  It seems like CXL, especially the natural CXL, seems to be a love or hate kind of thing. Some hate the creasing and oily feeling of the leather.  I happen to love CXL.  So that's a factor.  I understand about the "pigeon-y" toe comment and that word perfectly describes it.  I've owned my natty CXL PT boots (from TSM) for almost a year now and they are still one of my favorites but the pigeon-y toe look as always had me wondering if it could have been better shaped.

I haven't worn my J.Crew #8 PCT boot nearly as often but I am surprised how comfortable they are and how well they fit my feet.  I was convinced that the Modified last was the only Alden last that would really work and I've been surprised by the Barrie.  I wear both the Barrie and Modified in a - .5 from TTS.  I do not have any Barrie-lasted shoes so I can't comment on whether Barrie boots are tighter/smaller than Barrie shoes, but others have commented on this.

Others disagree but I kind of think starting more slowly is best.  Start with calf and then if the interest is there, then start spending more on shell.  No good logic there, just what I think worked for me.  Good luck to your brother in his quest and keep us posted.

Here you go.  This pic is a couple of months old and I have quite a few boots in my rotation so I may wear a pair once every three weeks or so.  That's why they probably don't look too beat up.  But I do try to take care of my footwear.

Natty chromexcel is pretty cool, but hands down, the J Crew color 8 Cap toe boot should be the choice (imho).  However, I suppose it depends on what your brother wants to wear with this first Alden boots.  The J Crew boot is much more versatile; it dresses up much better than Natty Chrmxl, and can be worn casually as well.  If he's looking for a casual more rugged look, the PT boot may be a better choice.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

BootSpell, after seeing your photo it looks like he's decided on the natural chromexcel boot but wasn't able to get his size. I guess waiting will give him the full Alden experience.

the j. crew boot seems/looks much sleeker than a barrie last, it feels narrower than other barrie last shoes i own, especially in the toe box, but the length is the same.

Thank you
