Interesting - I've had so many run ins with bad quality I'm surprised I still like em. shog[1].gif

@medihound - I just realized you're 'phototristan' on YT. Nice to see you here.

Yes, I should probably change my username on here. Anyone know if I could?

Some probably would not even notice it or wouldn't care but I did and returned them.

I've got more variation in color than that on a single piece of leather... on each shoe of one pair of my 990s.  They look good inside, but step into the sun and BAM!!1 looks like they were finished by a toddler... not sure why it doesn't bother me so much.  There's a part where you can see drips going horizontally across the back.

I guess I just think of them as exotic.  Like a 95 Ford Ranger Splash.

The classic catch-22: they are not perfect and you consider returning them; however, they have no other pairs in your size and you may not get another pair for a year or more. Decisions, decisions. Ugh .....

First ever family portrait. Sitting tight with eight pairs, with a mix of shell, calf, and suede. No boots (yet), other than the suede chukkas. And no repetition of colors!

Back row (L to R):
Ravello LWB (Alden DC); Alpine Grain LWB (Unionmade); #8 LWB (stock); Dark Brown leather (J. Crew)

Front row (L to R)
Calf V-tips (LeatherSoul); Snuff Suede PTB (LeatherSoul); Unlined Tan Suede Chukka (used, from SF); Cigar PTB (used, from SF)

It should be easy to get a replacement 975. Did you get one?

Yes you can change your username. For me it was just a matter of making a request to one of this threads administrators. It was your YouTube video mediahound, and the encouragment of others here, that greatly influenced my decision to get a pair of J Crew cap toe boots. They're marvelously simple and elegantly crafted. Welcome to the jungle!

Any recommendations for a first pair of Alden's that'll serve me well with some upcoming weddings this spring/summer while also appropriate for job interviews? I'm partial towards wing tips and I want to keep my budget ~$500-600. I'm a young adult if that makes any difference.

I personally would not wear a wingtip to a job interview.

I'd probably wear a PTB or cap toe.

Ah thank you! Been regretting my tacky Sun Tzu pun username since the day I joined this board.

Cap toe blucher seems like a good idea here. I think something from Alden without the 360 degree reverse welt makes for a more slightly more formal shoe. Blucher keeps it from being too formal. Of course a bal on the Hampton is super sharp. Thinking here of Bakes' recent photos of his #8 bal. Great looking shoes.

Hi guys.
I have black cordovan longwings in size 11 US, barrie last, that fit amazing. What size should I be after in a pair of Indys? Thanks in advance

Thank you, Sir.

$500-$600 puts you in the calf range.  If you can spend a little more you can get shell cordovan.

I agree with Frank, I would get either the Perforated Cap Toe in Black or Color 8 or the Strait Tip Balmoral in Black or Color 8. (or the Strait tip Blucher in either color for that matter)

I respectfully disagree with media hound.  I find that a Short Wing Bal is more appropriate for an interview than a PTB.  Assuming you would be wearing a suit.  I doubt that wearing either one would make a difference between you getting and not getting the job.  Unless of course someone from this thread is the one interviewing you.

I think the #8 is a bit more versatile than black in the sense that it can be worn with a blue or charcoal suit.  I consider black to be a little more formal, and don't like the way black shoes look with a blue suit, unless you are a train conductor or mailman.  These points are highly debatable though.  Also, if you are in any of the weddings, they may request that you wear black shoes.

You shouldn't have much difficulty finding either model that I mentioned in calf or shell.  Most people wouldn't know the difference.

Good Luck!

Make sure you come back to post pics of your acquisition.

Edit:  After thinking more about your situation, I have decided that the only thing for you to do is spend a few thousand dollars on a well-rounded collection of Aldens.  I see no way around it.

Edit: Edit:  Actually, Strait Tip Blucher in Burgundy might not be that easy to find.

11 US on the Trubalance Last as well for your Indy should work just fine.

No problem.

By the way here's a diagram of their Lasts. As you can see the Trubalnce is just a bit bigger than the Barrie.
