As Uncle Mac says, they're shoes after all, not Rembrandts. smile.gif

I realized this because I was really drawn to the antique edge trim on the Cigar LHS when I was buying them.  While wearing them, it is much less noticeable than in the TSM pics.

Thanks for the advice guys.

If this didn't work would you consider using some Saphir burgundy cordovan creme?

I assume they don't have another pair. Moving on.

If the fit is good, and you otherwise like them, I can say with some degree of certainty that you will regret sending these back (if you do) for that "imperfection."

In all seriousness, if one looks long enough at any new pair of shells, one can find at least a perceived imperfection. For starters, the hide does not take to the dye uniformly, meaning, there will never be total consistency of color thru-out the entire shoe/boot (black excluded).

As I have acquired more shell over time, I have become less and less concerned about "imperfections" like this one. My concerns have lessened partially because it happens all the time - whether Alden., AE, C&J, etc., partially because many perceived imperfections are simply due to the nature of shell, and particularly because sending them back means you may never get that model again in your size (or at least not for many months/years). I can think of numerous models I have that were literally "the last one" in my size they had.

So ............ all of this is to say, keep the boots - they look great. And, if you wish, throw some Saphir cordo cream in burgundy on that spot.

Enjoy!!

Thanks SFTG. There isn't another pair in my size, and I'm sure it would be another year before the next pre order -- and like you say, the next pair could be worse (coloring, loose stitching, etc.).

Thanks Alcibiades - I'm finding that they hit a really "sweet-spot" in my wardrobe that I'd been looking to fill with various other shoes. I enjoy the Leydon last a lot, and the slightly different silhouette it creates. And based on my current wardrobe composition the color goes really well with just about anything I can throw together in the morning.

Hits all my bases! wink.gif

I almost wish I didn't look, but while an inspection under normal indoor lighting reveals essentially no flaws, under direct sunlight the front of the left boot has a section that appears lighter (took the dye differently, I guess), and that has a dark line in the middle of this section.

Beautiful boots!  Mine were part of that pre-order, but unfortunately, they didn't make it out of Alden's QC.  Steven was a complete gentleman in handling the situation, so kudos to Leffot on their customer service.

Out of all of the Alden QC issues, these stories anger me the most. Alden couldn't take a hide destined for a color 8 longwing or something and remake your pair?

Wore this combo today. Notice the lighter color on the edge trim on the toe, this is from abrasion. What is the usual fix for this?

Agreed, this sort of thing baffles me.

Glad to stumble upon this forum, Mac method revived my LWB. Time for some more cordovan.

I hear you.  As much as I love their products, the quality of their customer service drives me crazy.  Just don't understand why they couldn't do what Alcibiades is suggesting.

Yeah, it is unfortunate, especially since the fit seems to be excellent, and I am otherwise smitten with them. I know it's been said before that if you are going to get into shell, you need to let go of some imperfections. I'd be curious to hear others' thoughts (thank you for yours) on whether this crosses that line in their experience.

Hi PD,

First: Those are a magnificent pair of Tankers, wear them in good health. Please don't let that small imperfection get to you. I bought the same pair of shoes from Leffot several years ago, and like your pair, mine also had very similar flaws in the finish. Honestly, after a few months of wearing and using the Mac Method you'll love them even more. I am the proud owner of nine pair of Alden shell boots and my #8 Leffot Tankers remain the most versatile pair I own..
Enjoy!

tmw

p.s. this does NOT let Alden off the hook for their increasingly sloppy QC. I've been wearing Alden shell since the 70's, and the defects and sloppy manufacturing I've seen over the last 2 years are infuriating.

Gentlemen,

My new Leather Soul 4 eyelet PTB in color 8. Single leather sole feels amazing.

Please excuse my poor iPhone shots, will retake some more soon.

I'm finally ready to do the deed and get my first pair of Aldens.  Some variation of the Indy boot.

Thing is, I live in the Northeast, and am really learning toward the commando sole.  Leffot has the 405C, which features the commando sole and is available in my size, but I'm really learning toward the darker CXE leather.  So I've emailed Leather Soul to inquire about the Ultimate Indy in my size (10.5 D, I believe).

The best boot I've seen yet though is Epaulet's Innsbruck Indy, which seem unavailable at the moment.  Would anyone more familiar with this than myself be willing to comment on their availability a) for sale here, on eBay, etc. or b) being re-run by Alden.  Love the brass with the CXE leather.

The third option I guess would be to order the standard Indy 403 and have them resoled?  Would it be possible through Alden (or a similar avenue) to have the brass added?

Thanks very much in advance -- I appreciate any help anyone's will to lend!

May noy be the look you are going for, but I own a few pair of Indy's and my favorite by far are the Tobacco Chamois I picked up from ShoeMart. Has a commando sole and is perfect for NE weather. Does not have contrast stitching, and is darker than the CXL, wouldn't work w brass eyelets etc. but I figured I'd put in a plug.

This was a really great boot - they flew off the shelves; in one day and gone almost the very next. I wouldn't plan on a restock of them anytime super soon, inasmuch as Alden's production is usually slower, and Epaulet only recently got the debut line of Innsbruks. I'd anticipate 6-months to next year, if at all. They pretty much run a unique Indy every year, but they AFAIK they don't frequently restock. One run, and gone on most custom makeups.
