I'm in a "There aren't any other Aldens I want" phase too. Which would be great, except that I'm after a couple of other makes now. So no net savings. Also clouded by the fact that I have two pair of Aldens waiting delivery (#8 tanker from Leffot and Modified kudu Indy from Moulded). I am successfully passing on that #8/scotch grain saddle from Leffot, for now...

They will lighten up over time, but color 8 from Alden - when new - can vary significantly from moderately dark to very dark (almost purple/black-ish). This will obviously have a bearing on how much they will lighten up with use and time.
I just wear my aldens regardless of weather. I have sold off all of my non-cordovan models so I just go for it regardless of what's going on outside. I do have several with commando sole and one with dainite sole which I wear if it's raining, snowing, etc. Overshoes are not for me.
