You wore those shoes on Bourbon Street? If I'm down there during Mardi Gras, I'll only wear shoes that I can hose down and throw in the washing machine.

Anybody know which retailer stocks whiskey chukkas? Thinking about getting one for the spring.

Yeah, we'll see if they somehow show up today. TSM is going to get back to me after they contact FedEx.

Keep in mind also that the sole breaks in after some wear, which reduces heel slip.

I never understood the sole breaking in until my 3rd pair, and there is a noticeable difference afterwards. Heel slippage in the beginning is normal, and some people say it is necessary for correct fit.

With a double leather sole, the shoe is very stiff right off the bat, making a well-fitting shoe appear to have too much heel slippage. Once that sole gains some flexibility through a few wears, you shouldn't have a slippage issue.

This past week I got two pairs of Aldens: 1) Alden x Epaulet Brixton in #8 Shell and 2) the Alden x J.Crew LWB in ravello with brass eyelets that were just put up for sale from the Ludlow shop. Both are marked 9 1/2D, and I thought they were both on the Barrie last. I'm totally confused, because the Brixton is shorter and narrower than the LWB.

Did I miss the memo, and these aren't both supposed to be Barrie?

Here are the markings from the shoes:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Alden x J.Crew Ravello LWB 9.5D
3.5" at the wide part of the heel
12 3/4" Long

9 1/2 B/D 2H26X025 10
97504

Alden x Epaulet Brixton 9.5D
3.25" at the wide part of the heel
12 1/2" Long

9 1/2 B/D 2?14 026 10

Many people have reported that Barrie lasted boots are often shorter and narrower than Barrie lasted longwings. I have found this myself with Barrie captoe boots, and have subsequently sold all of mine (for boots, I need an E width). It seems to me that Barrie longwings tend to be longer and wider than most Barrie shoes in the same size.

I agree^^^  My LWBs have probably more room inside than they should.  (I prefer to err on the side of being a little roomy over a little too snug)  My J crew Cap Toe boot (also barrie) fits absolutely perfectly.  So yes, the LWB seems to be a little wider, but I don't think they are longer than my barrie lasted boot.

Assume you've check TSM's website.

Give Alden Madison Ave a call, I believe this is a standard model for them. That's where I got mine.

Maybe Alden DC too? I can't remember if I saw these there or not.

Was just at DC yesterday, almost 100 % positive they did not have whiskey chukka's.

Love the contrasts here.
Sorry for the bad pic.

Wow those are outstanding!

Are they MTO or where did you pick them up?

You made two apologies that were definitely not needed.  Firstly, calf is a great way to "gradually" work your way to shell.  That's how I did it.  Guys who buy shell as their first foray into higher-end footwear amaze me.  Going from $100-150 shoes to $700 shoes in one leap is incredible.

Secondly, the picture may not be as good as say, CTYGGG's, but it's good enough to show that's a great pair of boots there.  I don't wear much black and only have a few pair but that pair or something similar is now on my list.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm going to risk offending many members in this thread and the vast majority of shoes in my closet by saying that I don't necessarily think that shell is the ultimate goal of Alden ownership. peepwall[1].gif

I know we focus on shell a lot here, but there are many great Aldens in other leathers that we see here too. So go for shell if it is for you, and don't worry if it is not. Enjoy those boots. smile.gif

I'm very new here, albeit a long time lurker, and this thread has provided me with most of my knowledge and almost all of my inspiration regarding every shoe i've purchased for the last two years.  I love shell, and Alden's was definitely the inspiration behind my initial love of the brand.  But as I've become more and more familiar with the product, I find myself looking more and more at the other alternative horween leathers, especially the natural CXL and the chamois.

Alden SF had a re-stock a few weeks back, but it looks like there are no 8.5s on the website. May not hurt to give them a call just to make sure.

Natural CXL is a great option for casual wear. I find shell options to be too formal for my tastes. Exceptions are there of course - I think #8 LWBs look amazing with jeans - but generally speaking. I'm not exactly an argyle sock kind of guy and find tassels hilarious. peepwall[1].gif
