Mac: You have posted before about the Aberdeen last and that you thought it - above all others - was a difficult fitting last (I'm paraphrasing but think I have it right). I'm curious as to why you think this?

nephew,
the narrowness of the toe box i.e. width

My Cigar NSTs from Alden DC. I went with 11.5D instead of 11E, since that's what they had in stock.

Thanks, Uncle.

It works for me, with a firm, comfortable fit from heel through the ball of the foot. Perhaps I might have different creasing in the E width. I haven't had the opportunity to wear the Aberdeen in 11E yet, so ultimately, I'm not sure how big of a difference it would make. I equate it to owning Barrie shoes in both 11D and 10.5E. It seems they can both work for me and it then depends on what's available in a givemn makeup and whether I absolutely have to have it.

^ I've been thinking of giving this sizing technique a try. I have snuff suede chukkas on the Leydon in a 12.5C that fit great. I've been wanting to get the navy suede chukka from Alden Madison Ave, which is also on the Leydon but I doubt they will stock a 12.5C. Thinking of trying it in 12D to see if that fits similarly.

Why does it seem like its impossible to find Alden's captoe boot in either Ravello or Cigar for sale anywhere in a size 9d? Any ideas? Those Unionmade ones that were posted are pretty sweet. Congrats to whoever owns them.

Well, I'd say that there are fewer make-ups in Ravello and Cigar.  And the stockists are placing small orders.  And 9D is probably a very common size.  So the odds are not in your favor.

Ancient mathematicians were stumped by the problem of trying to square the circle - we have Alden lasts and sizing to keep us busy. I fear that the answer to both questions is the same.

I was hopeful my shell monks would arrive today, but, alas, I fear not.

Happy New Year everyone.
