i really need something with a commando/lugged sole for the snow when i go to sweden next week. the only thing available seems to be the Kudu, but the vibram seems a bit too rugged for me, or the chamois from shoemart. anyone have experience with a chamois indy boot? how do you treat it? durability in the wet?

Alden NYC stocks a chromexcel captoe boot on commando soles... I don't have any experience with Kudu

I have a similar pair - NST on commando, Plaza last, from JGilbert. They might be my favorite boots.

I have the kudu longwings from Leffot on the plantation crepe sole. I wore them all through the late winter and spring in the foul weather (rain, slush, mud, what little snow we had this year), and just started wearing them again for the fall this month. I have given them no treatment except hitting them with the brush after each wearing and they still look brand new. The natural oils (or rather however Horween and Alden treat them) make this shoe seem nearly impenetrable to the elements while still feeling nice and supple.
I have handled the tobacco chamois (but not worn) and I like the color quite a bit more than the kudu but I think the waxiness of the kudu beats the chamois in terms of durability.
Here's some old photos of my kudu longwings - I'll have to get a photo out in the elements sometime.

I do indeed have the #8 beefrolls from Rancourt.

The two loafers are different beasts (aside from the different strap). The Rancourts are really much more casual, unlined with a softer construction in the toe and in the sole (no Goodyear welting). The Rancourts come across as being much more of a handsewn shoe to me. Once broken in, they are like wearing slippers. That's why I like them.

But I also like that, while the LHS has the hand stitching on the toe, it also has a more substantial feel with a high toe box that I think is going to stay that way from the photos I've seen here.

I really like them both.
