I was curious, which version gives off that color?
And it's not the cordovan, bc you can tell when it's cordovan.
thanks.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the 403 is the Brown Chromoexel leather.  It's brown with only a hint of red.

The 405 is the full grain leather (not chromoexel) and is more reddish in hue.

Darn you people. Seems dumb NOT to pick up those #8 cap toes at this price. Will try to resist. I seem to have had a sudden influx of cap toe boots as is.

Happy hunting to all.

correct. but J. Crew calls the 403 the 405 for some reason. it's always been that way and has been discussed previously in this thread. the J. Crew 405 is the exact same Chromexcel as the normal 403.

I think I might order them as well. $470 with tax.

Can someone comment if the J Crew 405 Indy will have the same leather as my Roy Context boots?

Anyone have the J. Crew Tobacco Plain Toe Boot? Thoughts on it?

Both the 405 and the 403 will show reddish undertones in certain lights. The 405 leather will tend to become a bit more red with some age, though results will vary depending on how you care for it. The 403 chromexcel I have found to become a deeper brown with age; before I sold mine they had lost almost all of the red undertones.

Brown chromexcel is quite clearly brown from most other shoemakers, but Alden may do some additional finishing of their own that causes variation in the color. They do that for their #8 shell cordovan which is why it possesses that distinct, rich darkness that other shoemakers lack.

Both Horween Brown Chromexcel, so yeah, same leather.

Wow! I just read on Deal Daddy about the J.Crew sale. After I picked up two pairs of Alden's, I came here to tell everyone, but it looks like you already know! Haha. Great sale.

Hey, I am thinking of ordering the Black CXL Indys from Epaulet.

But wondering how they look after a few months (or more) of wear.  Can any one speak to it, or better yet post a pic?

Thanks.

That helps significantly, thanks. Was hoping the 405 developed that patina since it's the one i was leaning towards.

sidenote: That jcrew deal has me fiending the tobacco longwing now, why they gotta do that?

But whatever you do, consider that JCREW right now has 30% off all Aldens. This type of discount almost never happens.

No i have the suede boots from Jcrew... they are PTB... I have the jgilbert wingtip boots with commando sole... that is why my question was about returning the Tobacco... but I got the Tobacco for $272.00 and I can get the Suede for $272.00 as well. That what makes the thought of not purchasing Aldens from Jcrew so hard. I always get a deal.

Also the PTB in Tobacco were sweet and took a beautiful shine.

Thanks. I actually contacted Kyle there, and it sounds like they have the black only in the standard leather, not the CXL...  A great price though!
