If you like pebble grain, I recommend the English captoe boots on dainite soles made by a few manufacturers (Crockett and Jones, Alfred Sargent, etc). Something you won't easily get from Alden

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
this model isnt' on their site....i wonder how many in store exclusvies they have?[/quote]

They had 3 Alden models that came in and they should all be in the website soon: Ravello Cap toe, Pebble Grain Chukka and #8 Wing tip boots on crepe sole (very nice!).

I do have these on order from Moulded Shoe:

Should they ever come in, I think that will have my pebble grain boot needs taken care of. I also have an MTO from another shoemaker in the works that will combine pebble and shell. We'll see which I get first.

Appreciate the tip on other makers' pebble grain options, though. I don't really know anything about C&J or AS, so it's good to hear they offer some nice makeups along these lines.

Looks very similar to the Alden for J crew pebble grain cap toes...

They are indeed very similar. These are on the Modified last, which is what appeals to me. I also like the closed heal on the model from Moulded. Of course, the J Crew version has the advantage of a commando sole. Apparently they don't do that for the Modified last.

Cap Toe Boots (Ravello)

PTB Beales (Cigar)
Indy Boots (CXL)

damn those cap toes are nice. i wish they had leather soles though...seems odd to have a cap toe boot with a chunky commando sole. i'm still holding on to my ravello brixton pre-order from epaulet (feb 2011)...

enjoy wearing them today, it's nasty out there all around the bay area.

I am over CXL.

The only problem with them is that they tend to look a bit too orange/pumpkin like versus the CXL Indys which have a nicer shade to them.

^ Yea, on barrie w/ commando sole doesn't scream sleek or dressy, but that's sort of the point.  It can be paired with easily jeans, chinos and trousers.  I also intend to wear it with suits (gasp).  But I also wear my LWBs with suits (double gasp).

Mother nature is giving me a free car wash today, but didn't stop me from taking them on maiden voyage.  Don't intend on babying them.  icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

I find Alden's commando sole pretty low profile - it's not like a Red Wing Vibram lug sole. I've been surprised at how well the sole works with a lot of different models (Leffot's ravello PTB being a good example)

thanks for the rec, i was just thinking that i need a nicer boot to wear on wet days like today. c&j w/ dainite sounds like a good option.

actually i meant the captoe is more dressy, so wearing them w/ a suit seems fine esp on days like today. barrie w/ commando seems about as chunky as you can get from alden. if i didn't have the ravello brixton on preorder, i probably would have bought the unionmade kirkwood last night since my size was still available.

Completely agree and don't find the need to dress them down because of the sole.

By people's shell lists its quite clear to see the addictive nature of the horse's rear-end.

I wore my Black Plain Toe boots with commando sole at my wedding with my navy blue suit and they looked great- really shiny and nice looking in the pics. The wedding and reception were outside so it seemed appropriate.

of course, I spent a good couple of hours shining them with several coats of elbow grease and just a hint of paste a few days before.
