I've owned my first pair of Aldens for a couple weeks now and just wanted to thank you guys for providing a great forum. I based much of my purchase decision on your posts and it was on this thread that I heard about the Tom Austin sale that made it possible to get my first pair. I bought a color 8 longwing floor model that was lovingly restored to somewhat match the left, which sat quietly in a box since 2002. They couldn't be considered firsts or even seconds, but it's the imperfections and mismatched color that endear them to me.

Though this will surely be shunned by the argyle devotees, I usually wear mine without socks. I prefer the feel of the shoes directly on my feet and think the aesthetic bears a sense of candor to which I'm partial. I get a lot of crap for this from the older crowd at work, but I enjoy that as well. I might even be referred to as a 'hipster' by a few, but my intent to support quality, American made products is as genuine as the next person posting here.

I've bought three shoes in the past couple months and am hoping my spending soon begins to wane. In addition to the #8 longwing, I have the The Bureau Kudu Boot and may be getting some #8 Indy Boots if I'm lucky enough to end up in the minority who has a decent experience with North River Outfitter. I'm surprised by the lack of love for kudu on this thread but caveat this sentiment by saying I do not own any chromexcel. It's a bigger test of will to rest my kudu boots than anything else I own.

Anyway, thanks for maintaining such a quality thread. I'm having a lot of fun on here.

BULLSHIT

Epaulet, Leffot, Leathersole, Context, etc., etc are all small businesses who still do markups.

Allow me to give you some "crap" (all in good fun, of course...) for writing that sentence. Going sockless in LWBs is cool if that's what you want, but "the aesthetic bears a sense of candor"? I consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent person (others may disagree) and I have no idea wtf that means.

+1 (to both points) ...but obviously we aren't thinking about street cred

Quoting a very old post - NAMOR's Alden SF pics inspired me to order the color 8 captoe boots. I hope mine look like this with wear.

Before we all get overly sentimental about the Blackbird Christopherson's Creamery Milkman Boot - I owned that boot and ultimately flipped them without ever wearing them. As we all know, the Barrie last isn't "sleek". Add to that the 360 degree storm welt and you have a pretty "substantial" boot (they may have been based on Peter Boyle's boots in Young Frankenstein). I never seemed to find a place to wear them.

Those boots (which are outstanding) look like they are on the Plaza last - from Alden SF?

The pictured boots are on Plaza and were apparently from LeatherSoul. The Alden SF boots are Barrie (I would need an E in Plaza). I think the boots are similar from other standpoints (flat welt, dark sole, blind eyelets, etc)

Anyone aware of a vendor carrying the whiskey LWB? I know some of the rarer colors are getting scarce. Thanks in advance!

yes, but those places offer many models all the time Alden wouldn't tell them no. Blackbird is a little maker who had a model a couple years ago. Maybe Alden regards them as not worth their time.

I'm an artist and tend to lean toward the figurative side of language. In an attempt to pull the literal meaning from it...I think shedding an article of clothing that is generally considered to be a standard component of a man's outfit is a subtle gesture of presenting particular aspects of my personality to others. There's something personal and slightly intimate to me about showing some skin to strangers...even if only a slight glimpse of ankle. I think it's a meaningful attempt at expressing my open and honest nature to others. And no, that doesn't mean I go commando as well.
