What's the best way to bar lace a 5 eyelet shoe (like the shortwings)?

They're in the Olympic Mtns rain shadow and get very little rain especially when compared to Seattle.
I don't think twice about wearing my cordovans in the rain.
What I do think about is the sole material and if I know I'll be walking in the wet, I wear something other than leather sole.

Thanks for the clarification. I see you are from Seattle-ish. I was up in Seattle a few weeks back with my wife and we enjoyed ourselves. Much thanks to forum member 100yrs for some good shopping/dining suggestions.

Any chance to trot out that odd rain shadow fact about Sequim.
To the rest of the world, AoC is more or less in Seattle though.

If I didn't wear it when it rains, it would severely cut down the number of day I'd wear shell.
Hope you got some good weather while you were here. Weather has really sucked the past couple weeks.

overshoes solve this matter

I find that overshoes look silly though. If Im going to work and its rainy I just carry my shell in a bag and change once I'm inside. If we're talking going out and it's raining (kind of impossible to avoid in Portland) I just don't wear shell. I feel like a goof when wearing overshoes.

We got fantastic weather. It was in the high 60's, low 70's while we were there. Got chance to watch the Angels beat the Mariners (we are big Angels fans) while we were up there too. Best stop for food was certainly Matt's in the Market. Also had a chance to stop by JGilbert. Yenni is great. The rest of their staff is really kind and helpful as well. Although there were no Alden offerings I was interested in, my wife and I each picked up some Lucchese boots.

Alden "Milkshake" Suede Indy Boot, made exclusively for Epaulet.  Just arrived today.  Pics came out a bit whiter that the actual color, which is more gray/taupe, similar tones to the lace colors.

Gorgeous boot.  I'm gonna kill the first person to accidentally kick, bump, step on, swipe, splash, brush, nick, tap, or even breathe on my foot.

European bar lace

Works well if the quarters close completely or come pretty close together.

Took a quick visit to Alden SF today at lunchtime.  Had the cigar indy on Barrie in my size.  Tried it on.  Perfection.  Would have gotten it if I didn't just get another shell in cigar recently.  Just as FYI.  Was definitely on Barrie last.

What are they getting for those? Last time I checked, about 6 months ago, it was like $710. + tax.
