Alden just last week refused my request for commando soles. The guy on the phone said it was "too much trouble" for them. They are sending them back. He was adamant that they only now replace soles with exactly what they were originally made on. I offered to pay whatever it took to get what I wanted. I live in NYC so will take my shoes to B. Nelson and see how they do. And I'll think twice before buying another pair of overpriced Aldens.

Man, that is horrible. Well with the experience of NAMOR and myself, I will not buy Alden's at full price.

am i in the minority that doesn't like NSTs?

also i didn't realize there was such backlash when recrafting Aldens. that's crazy. what is more ridiculous is that there are so many variations of models due to store special orders is that you wouldn't think this is a big ******* deal. say Leffot stocked the 1339, but with a commando sole. does this mean when it comes time to recraft they will only put a commando sole even though they make the same shoe with a double leather sole?

Well said. This is insane. What does Alden care what sole you are putting on your shoes if you are paying for the recrafting anyways? The Alden craftsman is just pulling a commando sole off the shelf rather than a double leather sole. I hate unreasonable restrictions such as this that have no reasonable rationale underlying them.

Does B.Nelson have the same low profile commando sole Alden uses (or even cooler soles like cats paw, etc.) and can they do the natural or antique or any other edge finish that you could previously get through Alden? If so, then there really is no reason to go through Alden.

I got my 405s back from Bnelson having resoled them to an English commando sole which has much thicker lugs than the stock Alden commando sole. The old sole had worn out. Pics below. They are very shiny again but they'll dull again once I put some wear on them.

i would do it and go with color 8 lwb

Did the #8 lwb with a #8 belt.

Suit: Saks Made in USA blue pinstripe, Loro Piana fabric
Shirt: white BB slim fit ainsley collar]
Tie: Thomas Pink yellow tie with small navy flowers (similar to the Hermes or Ferragamo look)
Pocket square: white, straight fold

Overall, very conservative and clean. I had a red Valentino stripe tie for back-up, but I went with what I wanted.

Oh, and I think the interview went well, too.

Well, Alden does have the original last. That's about the only reason someone might choose to stick with Alden.

Another option for resoling your Aldens is Moulded Shoe in NYC. From what I understand, they have access to the Alden soles and can put them on in-house. I don't know all the details, but it's worth finding out.
