I've noticed some plastic sticking up around the welt of my Indy 403s... it's like a lining of some sort ... is this part of the storm welt piece to seal against water?

I noticed that on both of my indys I tore it off thgouht it was just plastic leftover from the sole? Didn't affect my kudus in snow

Without seeing it, I would say, yes.  The storm welt has a "finger" or flange of plastic coming up from the welt.  It's stitched through and seals the outsole.

It was sunny in San Francisco today and close to summer time - this means Whiskey and White Slacks (WWS) for me:

To be honest, I think Jcrew has surprisingly good service. Ask them to just replace them on the spot; I am pretty confident they will. Don't even bother with the repair route.

In all honesty the customer support I've gotten from J.Crew in the past has been well above and beyond helpful. I also had to work out an exchange on some cordovan captors where the speed hooks were tearing through and that went without effortlessly smooth.

I did take the Indy's to J.Crew today and the sales girl was quite baffled by my request. I.e. bring the boots there to have them sent back to Alden. But they took them and I guess I'll call tomorrow to see what the status is. I'm fine with waiting a couple of months if it takes that long. Summer is on the way and big heavy boots aren't necessarily the order of the day on most sunny Los Angeles days.

I've actually seen shots of Alden (during the mfg process) shrink wrapping the uppers with clear plastic while the sole of the shoe is built/finished in the factory. It would be obvious to assume they do this to protect the upper. The "pull-up" characteristics of the chromexcel used on the 403 is prone to scuffs pretty easy.

If i had to guess what the plasic in the welt is, it would be that.

^^^

My Officer's Indys from Epaulet had a bit of that clear plastic sticking out between the upper and the reverse welt too. That's what I assumed it was, and I just carefully cut it away. No problem.

Anybody want to take my pair of Whiskey Cordovan Alden LHS 12D off my hands? Bought last summer, lightly worn for a few months, too small.

Love these, they are classics, I'll be purchasing a new pair in my size.
