The lack of liner & the flex welt make it the most comfortable Alden that I've ever worn right out of the box. Here's a few comparison pics of my PTB's to get a sense of the way each makeup creases.

My only concern is that the PTB is only available in 10D... I alternate between 9.5E and 10D, but 9.5E is my true barrie size... I would gather that the longer length plus unlined construction would lead to more severe creasing... However none of the retailers I know order the unlined PTB in E widths, so I may have to suck it up

Usually, the seller will describe the type of leather used, if it's a special version of a shoe.

No, it cannot be assumed that all black calf leather used on Indys is Pegasus leather: as per Epaulet, Pegasus is a thick, matte finished cowhide - not calf.
To contrast, see Leather Soul's Ultimate Indy's which are made with aniline calf  (and, coincidentally, are available for sale right now: http://leathersoulhawaii.com/2012/02/24/alden-shoe-black-ultimate-indy-lsw/)

The standard 401 is made with calf leather; however, I don't know if there is a difference between the "normal" calf leather used and aniline calf; if anyone here knows of a difference, please speak up! smile.gif

by the way, I know of no shoe that uses Pegasus leather save for the Black and Tans -

Thanks for clarifying! I've been recently eyeing the Nat CXL and black Indy... I just wouldn't wear it enough since I already have a handful of SC boots in addition to a couple of Tricker's and more casual boots... I really like the look of aged Nat CXL though...

A few weeks ago I went tromping through NYC all day in my CXL Indys ... in a total downpour ... the kind of rain that you just don't want to be in at all... and the boots held perfectly fine... and I didn't treat them with anything at all. No cream, no polish, no defender, none of the above prior to wearing them that day. Feet stayed dry as a bone, and after the shoes dried out and I buffed with a rag and a brush, they looked immaculate

You could probably sell your 2nd tin to someone here. You seriously will not need it since you use like less than a cap full of the stuff for a pair of shoes.

I think many people here would agree with you about the look of aged Natural CXL ...

So Shoemart posts a bunch of new Alden shoes on the website and not a single size is in stock on nearly each pair. Brilliant!

No kidding! They listed some 6 eyelet ankle boots that I really liked but you can't get them!

yeah those bootmaker editions usually start at size 8.5, bad for those with smaller feet frown.gif, sometimes the very popular ones will be made in sizes smaller than 8.5, in which case if its something you are interested in you'd better jump on it because they usually only have one in stock of each size, good thing Shoemart has a good return policy

+1, very frustrating that they put all these shoes up w/o a stock to buy

the cigar boots seem decent, especially for being on the Aberdeen, a nice touch that takes away a lot of the "grandpa" effect of a 6-eyelet boot

Note the Aberdeen last in this pic ... and the heel, which, despite mediahound's objections is.... clearly NOT the M58 last

god, what I wouldn't give to get a pair of those.

Ew. The chukka is bad enough, but they had to add the NST, which is probably the worst look ever on a shoe. Together, it's like a spoonful of urine covered feces. YMMV.

I wonder if they're on the barrie last?
