Good point, anyone know the etymology of #8 as a colour name?

Actually, now that I think about it, "8" was probably the number of the racehorse whose butt was used in the first pair of cordovan longwings, so it stuck.

Actually that would be Horween guys back in the day who came up with #8 (and #4).
I suspect Whiskey, Ravello, Cigar, Black, etc also have numbers but that's just wild speculation on my part.

bootwise they would be called tanker boots, while not a easy model to find, some of the Alden specialty shops come out with their own versions from time to time, Leffots has one with leather soles.

I actually bought and return the Cigar Shells in one of the links. They are not Barrie Last. Upon returning, I told the folks as well that they should revise the description.

Also, the Tankers from Leffot have commando soles.

I'm also interested in the NST on the Barrie last, not the Aberdeen, which is narrow and pointy and seems to have a high vamp. I can understand some may need this shape and more power to them.

My wild guess would be something to do with the amount of stain applied to the shoe... 8 coats ...

There are some black pebble grain long wings at Brooks Brothers for $350+tax/shipping. This is after the 15% kicker.
I believe they're on the Grant last. Cordovans are $50 off + a 15% kicker.
These are in the Black Fleece section under accessories.
There are some nice boots and double monks there too, both C&J I think.

BTW, the 15% off doesn't show up until you view your cart.

Do Aldens ever go on sale or should I just pay the ~$400 for a pair of Balmorals on theshoemart?

Also, I'm usually a 12D - do Aldens run true to size?

I really like these boots, however I still have some questions. How does this boot fare in terms of styling and longetivity. Is this a classic style, or will I look back 3 years from now and ask why did I ever buy these boots? I like the split toe look but it is something I have never seen anyone wear in real life, just wondering if it is a SF fad or not? Btw, the toebox looks good, just wondering what last and size did you get? most of the aldens I have seen look clunky, but these boots really look good and sleek in the second pic.
